## Story

## Penny Tries a New Path

Penny was a bright-eyed pink pig who loved the meadow beside the old oak trees. She also worried about mistakes. Whenever she saw something new, her curly tail twisted tight.

One morning, a butterfly with rainbow wings floated from flower to flower. Penny wanted to know which bloom it liked most, so she hurried after it.

Her hooves landed in Mr. Hopsworth's carrot patch.

"I am sorry," Penny said, looking at the bent leaves. "I wanted to study the butterfly, and I forgot to watch my feet."

Mr. Hopsworth looked at the row. Then he handed Penny a small trowel.

"Then we can study and repair," he said.

## Careful Steps

Mr. Hopsworth showed Penny how to step between the rows. Penny moved slowly, nose down, counting each space before she placed a hoof.

They set the carrot leaves upright, pressed soil around the roots, and marked the safe path with smooth stones. The butterfly returned and rested on a purple thistle.

"Now we know," Penny said. "Butterflies like thistles, and gardens like careful feet."

Mr. Hopsworth smiled. "Both are useful discoveries."

## Acorn Work

Later in the season, Penny met Nutkin the squirrel beside a pile of acorns.

"This pile is too much for one squirrel," Nutkin said.

"I can roll the acorns with my snout," Penny offered. "You can tell me where they go."

Nutkin pointed. Penny rolled. Soon the acorns made neat lines near Nutkin's storage hollow. One acorn bumped a badger's door, and Penny stopped at once.

"Excuse us," she said. "We need a better route."

The badger drew a path in the dirt with one claw. It curved around his door and ended beside Nutkin's hollow.

## Winter Teams

When chilly weather arrived, the animals gathered under the oak trees to prepare their homes.

Some animals could reach high branches. Some could carry moss. Some could fit into tight spaces. Penny remembered the stone path and the acorn route.

"What if every job has a partner?" she asked.

The deer held branches steady. The squirrels tucked moss into small nests. Penny carried bundles in a basket on her back. Mr. Hopsworth checked the paths so nobody stepped on new plants.

By sunset, each home had what it needed.

## Penny's Discovery

Penny sat by the brook and watched the first snow rest on the grass.

Her tail was still curly, but it did not twist so tight anymore. A mistake was not the end of the day. It was a place to pause, apologize, and make a wiser plan.

The butterfly flew past one more time and landed on a thistle beside the safe stone path.
