## Story

## A New Friend in the Forest

The forest was full of familiar faces. Rabbits hopped near the clover. Squirrels raced along branches. Birds sang from the hawthorn hedge.

One morning, a new animal arrived at the clearing. The newcomer had a long nose, floppy ears, and a bright tail that curled like a question mark.

The forest animals stopped their games and stared.

"Who is that?" whispered one rabbit.

"I have never seen ears like those," said a squirrel.

The newcomer smiled and waved, but the games grew quiet. Making friends in a new place felt hard for a moment.

## A Quiet New Friend

For the next few days, the newcomer tried to join in.

They brought smooth pebbles for a counting game. They offered to share berries. They asked if anyone wanted to make leaf boats in a puddle.

Some animals were polite, but no one stayed long. The newcomer sat beside a mossy stump and folded their bright tail around their feet.

"Maybe they only see how different I look," the newcomer thought.

Then a soft voice said, "May I sit with you?"

## A Kind-hearted Friend

A small creature with fluffy fur and round eyes stood nearby, holding two acorn cups of water.

"I am Mira," said the fluffy creature. "I noticed you made leaf boats yesterday. I like leaf boats."

The newcomer brightened. "I can make one with a curled bark sail."

Mira grinned. "Show me."

They spent the afternoon building boats from leaves, bark, and seed pods. The newcomer's long nose was perfect for nudging tiny sails into place. Mira's soft paws were perfect for smoothing the edges.

"We make a good team," Mira said.

The newcomer smiled for the first time that day. "We do."

## Facing Challenges Together

The next morning, Mira invited the newcomer to gather berries for a picnic.

On the way, they found a puddle spread across the path. It was not wide, but Mira's paws did not like the sticky mud.

"I can reach that branch," said the newcomer, stretching their long nose toward a fallen twig. They pulled the twig closer so Mira could step across the driest place.

"Thank you," said Mira. "Your long nose helped us."

At the berry patch, the sweetest berries hung behind a tangle of leaves.

"My paws can part the leaves," said Mira.

"And my ears can hold this branch aside," said the newcomer.

Together they gathered enough berries for everyone in the clearing.

"Your differences are helpful," Mira said.

"So are yours," said the newcomer.

## What the Friends Shared

At the picnic, the other animals noticed the berry baskets.

"How did you reach those?" asked a squirrel.

"We used both of our skills," said Mira. "The newcomer's ears and nose helped, and my paws helped too."

The animals looked again, more thoughtfully this time.

"I am sorry I stared," said one rabbit. "I did not know what to say."

"You can say hello," said the newcomer.

"Hello," said the rabbit, and everyone laughed gently.

That afternoon, the forest animals practiced asking kind questions instead of whispering from far away.

## Making Other Animal Friends

After that, the newcomer joined more games in the clearing.

The squirrels asked for help making a new seed toss game. The newcomer's curled tail made a perfect marker for the starting line.

The rabbits asked about leaf boats. Soon the puddle path was full of tiny boats with bark sails.

The birds asked the newcomer to describe the patterns on the ground that they could not see clearly from the branches.

"You notice details we miss," said a robin.

The newcomer stood a little taller. Being different no longer felt like a wall. It felt like a doorway into new games, new questions, and new friendships.

Mira stayed close, not because the newcomer needed hiding, but because good friends like to share good days.

## Everyone Playing Together

By the end of the week, the clearing sounded lively again.

Rabbits hopped through a seed toss course. Squirrels counted acorns. Birds sang from the branches while leaf boats floated in a line through the puddle.

The newcomer played in the middle of it all, bright tail curled proudly.

"I am glad you came to our forest," said the rabbit.

"I am glad I stayed," said the newcomer.

As evening came, the animals gathered under the oak to share fruit and stories. This time, the stories were not about who looked unusual. They were about what each friend could bring.

The forest had many shapes, many voices, and many ways to belong. That was what made every friendship brighter.
