## Story

## The Little Tree

In a green forest, a young tree grew near a bend in the path. Its leaves were smaller and rounder than the leaves on the tall trees nearby.

At first, the little tree liked its round leaves. They caught drops of morning dew and shone like tiny green cups.

Then the older trees began to whisper.

"Your leaves are not long like ours," said one.

"They do not flutter the proper way," said another.

The little tree rustled quietly. It wished it could stretch its leaves into the same shape as everyone else's.

One morning, a robin landed on a low branch.

"What sturdy leaves," the robin said. "They make a fine roof for a resting bird."

The little tree lifted its branches with surprise. "You like them?"

"I do," said the robin. "Different leaves can help in different ways."

## Autumn Is Coming

As the days grew cooler, the forest changed. The tall trees turned gold, orange, and red. Leaves spun gently through the air and settled on the path.

The little tree watched and waited. Most of its round leaves stayed green.

"Why are my leaves not falling like the others?" asked the little tree.

A squirrel paused with an acorn in her paws. "Trees grow in their own ways," she said. "Your leaves may have their own timing."

The little tree breathed in the cool air. A single round leaf loosened, twirled down, and landed beside the squirrel.

"There," said the squirrel. "Your autumn is beginning in its own quiet way."

The little tree felt a little braver. It did not have to change at the same speed as everyone else.

## The Bird's Nest

Soon the robin returned with dry grass in her beak.

"May I build my nest here?" she asked. "Your round leaves overlap in a helpful way."

"On my branches?" asked the little tree.

"Yes," said the robin. "They will keep the nest tucked and steady."

The little tree held still while the robin wove grasses and twigs into a soft bowl. Other birds visited and admired the leafy cover.

"These leaves make a cozy corner," said a wren.

The little tree felt its roots settle firmly into the soil. Its leaves had a purpose after all.

## Winter's Arrival

Winter arrived with pale mornings and soft snow. Many branches in the forest were bare, but the little tree still held a cluster of round green leaves.

A rabbit hopped beneath the tree during a cold breeze. A chipmunk followed. The robin tucked into her nest.

"There is room under my branches," said the little tree.

The animals gathered close, not crowded, but comfortable. The tree's leaves softened the wind and caught small flakes of snow.

## A Warm Haven

More forest friends learned about the quiet place beneath the little tree.

The squirrel brought acorn caps. The rabbit made a neat path through the snow. The birds sang soft songs in the afternoon light.

The little tree liked hearing different sounds beneath its branches: paws on snow, feathers brushing leaves, and the small happy chatter of friends keeping one another company.

"Your leaves brought us together," said the robin.

The little tree rustled with pride.

## A Strong Tree in the Forest

The older trees watched the animals gather around the little tree.

"We did not understand your leaves," one tall tree said.

"They are different," said another, "and they are useful."

The little tree did not puff up or bend away. It was glad the others were learning.

"Every tree gives something," said the little tree. "Tall branches, strong roots, broad shade, or round leaves."

The forest grew quieter after that, but not in an empty way. It was the kind of quiet that comes when everyone is thinking carefully.

## Embracing Our Uniqueness

When spring returned, new green buds appeared across the forest.

The little tree still had round leaves. The oak still had wide leaves. The birch still had fluttering leaves. None of them needed to match.

Birds nested in many branches. Squirrels ran along many trunks. Rabbits rested in many patches of shade.

The little tree no longer wished to look like every other tree. Its unique leaves had made shelter, friendship, and a gathering place in the snow.

And whenever a young seedling worried about growing in a new shape, the little tree rustled gently and said, "Grow your own way. The forest needs many kinds of leaves."
