## Story

## The Closed Gate

Rusty the rabbit and Sammy the squirrel were following a trail of sunflower seeds when they wandered into a quiet garden. Behind them, the wooden gate swung shut with a soft click.

"The gate closed," Rusty said, his ears drooping.

"Then we need a calm plan," Sammy replied.

The fence was too tall for Rusty. The latch was too far for Sammy. They could see the forest path beyond the slats, but neither friend could reach it without help.

"I can dig under soft soil," Rusty said.

"I can watch from the apple branch and tell you where the ground is clear," said Sammy.

"Then we work together," said Rusty.

## Planning Together

Rusty and Sammy sat beneath a flowerpot and studied the garden.

"The soil near the roses is packed hard," said Rusty.

"The soil near the lettuce bed looks softer," said Sammy from the low apple branch.

"Good looking," said Rusty.

Sammy smiled. "Good digging."

They made three rules:

Go slowly.

Check the soil before digging.

Stop if the plan feels wrong.

Rusty tapped the ground with one paw. Sammy watched the path and called out what she saw.

## Attempt #1: A Not So Great Start

Their first try was too quick. Rusty dug near the roses, and the hard soil crumbled into the hole.

"I rushed," Rusty said.

"And I called directions too late," Sammy said.

"We can learn from it," said Rusty.

They moved to the lettuce bed, where the soil was softer. Sammy dropped small pebbles to mark a straight line. Rusty followed the marks.

This time, their plan looked steadier.

## Rusty and Sammy's Second Attempt

Rusty dug carefully while Sammy watched from above.

"A stone is ahead," Sammy called. "Move a little to the left."

Rusty changed direction. His paws moved slowly, scoop by scoop.

Soon his nose poked through near the outside of the fence.

"It worked," he whispered.

The opening was still too small. Rusty wanted to squeeze through at once, but Sammy shook her head.

"Not yet. We said we would stop if the plan felt wrong."

Rusty backed up. "You are right. A nearly good plan still needs more care."

## The Careful Third Try

They widened the opening together. Rusty dug. Sammy cleared loose dirt with a leaf and checked both sides of the fence.

"Ready?" asked Rusty.

"Ready," said Sammy.

Rusty slipped through first, then turned back.

"The path is clear," he said.

Sammy followed through the opening, brushing soil from her tail.

"We did it," she said.

"We did it because we slowed down," said Rusty.

They followed the garden path back to the open meadow.

## The Final Check

Rusty and Sammy paused outside the fence to look back at the closed gate.

"Next time, we check gates before following snacks," said Sammy.

"And we stay on the meadow side unless a grown animal shows us the way," said Rusty.

They were tired, but proud. Rusty had not solved everything by digging. Sammy had not solved everything by watching. Together, they had made a plan that fit them both.

They shared a carrot top they had found near the fence and rested under the hedge.

## Back at the Forest

By evening, Rusty and Sammy were back at the edge of the forest.

"We make a good team," said Sammy.

"A careful team," said Rusty.

From that day on, they made plans before exploring. Rusty looked for soft ground. Sammy looked for safe paths. Both friends listened when the other said, "Wait."

Other animals soon heard about the closed gate and the careful plan.

"What made it work?" asked a young rabbit.

"Not rushing," said Rusty.

"And not working by yourself when a friend can help," said Sammy.

The young rabbit nodded as if that were a treasure worth remembering.

## The Garden Map

The next week, Rusty and Sammy returned to the meadow, this time with a simple map drawn on a leaf.

"Forest path," said Sammy.

"Meadow path," said Rusty.

"Garden gate," they said together, then laughed.

They did not need another closed-gate adventure to feel proud. They had already learned what mattered.

Different skills are useful. Calm plans are stronger than quick guesses. And a friend beside you can turn a confusing moment into a problem you can solve together.

Rusty tucked the map under a fern. Sammy placed an acorn on top to hold it down. Then the two friends headed home side by side.
