## Story

Buddy pressed his wet nose against the kitchen window.

A moving truck rumbled next door.

Out stepped a sleek gray cat with white paws and the longest whiskers Buddy had ever seen.

"A cat!" Buddy barked.

His tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled.

The cat looked over.

Her green eyes studied Buddy for a long moment.

Then she turned away and disappeared into the house.

Buddy watched the window all morning.

He had dog friends at the park.

But a cat friend?

That would be something new and exciting!

He bounced on his paws just thinking about it.

Around lunchtime, Buddy heard a soft scratching at the back door.

He zoomed over, his paws slipping on the smooth floor.

There stood the gray cat, looking through the screen.

"Hello!" Buddy barked.

"I am Buddy! Do you want to come in?"

The cat blinked slowly.

"I am Whiskers. Everything is new here. I do not know where anything is yet."

Buddy pushed the door open with his nose.

"Come in! Come in! I will help you!"

Whiskers stepped inside carefully, her tail low.

She glanced around at the kitchen with its bright yellow walls and sunshine streaming through the windows.

Buddy bounced in circles around Whiskers.

His paws made happy tapping sounds on the floor.

"You must be hungry! I will make you the best welcome snack ever!"

Whiskers sat down near the door and watched Buddy zoom around the kitchen.

She did not say anything, but her ears twitched.

Buddy grabbed his food bowl in his mouth and dragged it across the floor.

CLANG!

It banged into the cabinet.

"Oops!" He wagged his tail.

He remembered the treats his human kept in the high cupboard.

Buddy stood on his back legs and stretched as tall as he could.

His paws scrabbled against the counter.

"Wait," Whiskers said softly.

"Maybe you should not do that."

But Buddy was already pulling the cupboard door open.

A box of dog biscuits tumbled out.

Then a bag of cat treats.

Then a rubber ball.

Then his favorite squeaky toy.

Everything crashed onto the counter in a glorious pile.

"Perfect!" Buddy barked.

"Now we need something special!"

He spotted the big bag of flour on the bottom shelf.

His human used flour to make delicious things.

Buddy grabbed the corner of the bag with his teeth and pulled.

The bag was heavier than he expected.

Much heavier.

Buddy tugged harder.

The bag slid forward.

Then it tipped.

Then it tumbled right off the shelf.

POOF!

White flour exploded everywhere.

It covered Buddy from nose to tail.

It covered Whiskers, who looked like a ghost cat.

It covered the floor, the counters, and even the window.

Buddy sneezed.

A cloud of white powder puffed out of his nose.

Whiskers hissed.

Her fur stood up in spiky white tufts.

In one graceful leap, she jumped onto the refrigerator, as far from Buddy as she could get.

"Wait!" Buddy called up to her.

"I was just trying to make treats!"

Whiskers crouched on top of the refrigerator.

Her tail swished back and forth.

"You are too loud. Too wild. Too much!"

Buddy's ears drooped.

Flour drifted down like snow.

His chest felt tight.

A tiny squeak came from the corner.

"Psst! Buddy!"

Buddy turned around.

In a cage on the counter sat Hammy the Hamster, his whiskers twitching with amusement.

"Hammy!" Buddy trotted over, leaving white paw prints everywhere.

"I am trying to be a good friend, but everything is going wrong!"

Hammy pressed his pink nose against the cage bars.

"That is because you are being a good dog friend. But Whiskers is a cat. Cats are different from dogs."

"Different how?" Buddy asked.

"Well," Hammy said, grooming flour out of his fur, "dogs like to run and play and make noise. Cats like calm and quiet. Dogs like to be together all the time. Cats like their own space."

Buddy looked up at Whiskers, who was still perched on the refrigerator.

"So what should I do?"

"Try asking her what she wants," Hammy suggested.

"Instead of guessing."

That made sense!

Buddy wagged his tail.

"Great idea!"

He backed up to get a running start.

If he could just get up to the refrigerator, he could apologize properly.

"Buddy, wait," Hammy squeaked.

But Buddy was already running.

His paws slipped on the flour-covered floor.

He slid sideways, crashed into the counter, and bumped the shelf where the pots and pans lived.

CRASH!

BANG!

CLANG!

CLATTER!

Pots tumbled down.

A frying pan bounced off the floor.

A colander rolled across the kitchen like a wheel.

The noise was tremendous and ridiculous and absolutely bonkers.

Whiskers yowled and leaped off the refrigerator.

She landed lightly despite all the chaos and ran toward the door.

"I am leaving!" she announced.

"This is too much! I should never have come here!"

"No, wait!" Buddy called.

But his voice came out as another loud bark.

Whiskers reached the door and stopped.

Her paw was on the screen, ready to push it open.

Buddy wanted to chase after her.

He wanted to bark and beg her to stay.

He wanted to bounce and wiggle until she understood he was trying to be nice.

But then he remembered what Hammy said.

Cats are different from dogs.

So instead, Buddy sat down.

He sat very still in the middle of the flour-covered, pot-scattered, completely absurd kitchen.

He did not bark.

He did not bounce.

He just sat there, quiet as a mouse.

After a moment, Whiskers turned around.

She tilted her head, surprised.

"Whiskers," Buddy said in the gentlest voice he could manage, "I am sorry. I wanted to make you feel welcome. But I did not ask what you wanted. What would make you comfortable?"

Whiskers studied him with her green eyes.

Slowly, she walked back across the kitchen.

She sat down a few feet away from Buddy, not too close, but not too far either.

"I am worried about this new neighborhood," Whiskers admitted.

"Everything is different from my old home. I do not need treats or toys right now. I just wanted a calm, quiet friend to talk to."

"Oh," Buddy said.

He thought about this.

His tail wanted to wag, but he kept it still.

"I am not very calm or quiet. But I can try. I can try very hard."

"You can?" Whiskers asked.

"Yes," Buddy said.

"I really want to be your friend. Even if we are different."

Whiskers groomed some flour off her paw.

"We are very different."

"That is okay," Buddy said.

"Different can be good."

For the first time, Whiskers purred.

It was a soft, rumbling sound.

"We should probably clean up this mess."

Buddy started to jump up, ready to zoom around the kitchen.

But then he remembered.

Calm.

Quiet.

He sat back down.

"How about we clean it up together?" he suggested.

"You can do it your way, and I can do it my way. We do not have to be the same."

Whiskers nodded.

"I would like that."

So they got to work.

Buddy grabbed a broom in his mouth and swept energetically, his tail wagging the whole time.

He could not help being enthusiastic.

That was just who he was.

Whiskers carefully picked up the pots and pans with her teeth and placed them back on the shelf, one at a time.

She moved slowly and precisely.

That was just who she was.

Hammy cheered them on from his cage.

"Teamwork!"

When most of the flour was swept up and the pots were put away, Buddy and Whiskers sat down together in the sunny spot by the window.

Buddy got them each a snack from the pile on the counter.

A dog biscuit for him and a cat treat for Whiskers.

They ate in comfortable silence.

Well, mostly silence.

Buddy still crunched his biscuit pretty loudly.

But Whiskers did not seem to mind anymore.

"So," Whiskers said, "tell me about the neighborhood. Are there any good trees?"

Buddy grinned.

"Three excellent ones! And a park! And a pond! I can show you everything! I will go slow, and you can explore however you want."

"That sounds nice," Whiskers said.

She bumped her head gently against Buddy's shoulder.

"Thank you for asking what I needed."

"Thank you for giving me another chance," Buddy replied.

"Even after the flour explosion. And the pot avalanche."

Hammy squeaked happily from his cage.

"Now that is what friendship looks like!"

Buddy and Whiskers looked at each other and started laughing.

It had been quite a catastrophe.

But it had also been the beginning of something wonderful.
