## Story

Ellie the elephant backed into Paws & Claws Pet Shop, her enormous bottom knocking three shelves sideways.

CRASH!

BANG!

TINKLE!

Hamster wheels rolled into the fish tank section.

Birdseed rained down on the dog beds.

A confused turtle wandered past wearing a cat collar.

- Whoops, Ellie mumbled.

This was the third time this week.

Actually, maybe the fourth?

She could not quite remember.

The shop owner, Mr.

Patterson, sighed and stepped over a pile of mixed-up merchandise.

Everything was always in the wrong place here.

Fish food with the ferrets.

Parrot perches in the puppy area.

Nobody could find anything anymore.

- Do not worry about it, squawked Pip the parrot from somewhere inside a hamster tunnel.

(That definitely was not where he was supposed to be.)

Mrs.

Whiskers the sleek gray cat picked her way through the mess, her nose wrinkled.

- Honestly, Ellie.

You are sweet, but you could not organize a one-elephant parade.

Ellie's trunk drooped.

Her ears sagged.

She tried SO hard to be helpful, but her memory had more holes than Swiss cheese.

Yesterday, she had volunteered to sort the dog toys.

She had sorted them perfectly into the reptile section.

The day before, she had helpfully restocked the bird treats.

In the aquarium.

With the goldfish.

- At least the fish seemed interested, Pip had joked.

But it did not feel funny.

Not today.

Ellie's stomach twisted into knots.

Nobody counted on her for important jobs.

Nobody trusted her to find things or fix things or remember things.

- I wish I could help with something that actually mattered, she whispered.

Tuesday morning burst into the shop like a parade.

Mrs.

Whiskers hurried through the door, her fur standing on end, her eyes wide with worry.

- EMERGENCY!

CRISIS!

CATASTROPHE!

Ellie jumped, accidentally knocking over a display of chew toys with her trunk.

- My daughter's birthday party starts in ONE HOUR, and I cannot find her present!

Mrs.

Whiskers wailed.

- It is a blue toy mouse with a silver jingly bell!

I hid it here yesterday so she would not peek, but now it is GONE!

She spun in frantic circles.

- It could be ANYWHERE in this mixed-up madness!

Ellie's heart thumped.

This was serious.

This was important.

This was-

- I will find it!

Ellie announced, standing tall.

Mrs.

Whiskers froze mid-spin.

- You?

- I know this shop better than anyone!

Ellie said, which was technically true.

She had accidentally explored every corner while looking for things she had misplaced.

- Maybe we should wait for someone more reliable?

Mrs.

Whiskers suggested carefully.

The words stung like a bee, but Ellie lifted her trunk high.

- I can do this.

I promise!

Pip tilted his head doubtfully.

- Good luck with that, friend.

Ellie thundered toward the toy section, her mind racing.

Blue mouse.

Silver bell.

How hard could it be?

Very hard, it turned out.

She rummaged through the dog toy mountain and emerged triumphantly holding a blue rubber bone.

- FOUND IT!

- That is a bone, Mrs.

Whiskers said weakly.

- Right!

Of course!

Ellie dropped it and dove into the bird supplies.

She pulled out a beautiful blue feather.

- Getting warmer?

she asked hopefully.

- Colder, actually.

Ellie checked behind the fish tanks.

Nothing but algae.

She searched under the hamster tubes.

Nothing but wood shavings.

She investigated inside the rabbit hutches.

Nothing but annoyed rabbits.

Her trunk trembled.

Her legs felt wobbly.

- Forty-five minutes left!

Mrs.

Whiskers announced, pacing faster.

Ellie found a blue water bowl.

A collar with bells (but green, not blue).

A blue blanket covered in dog hair.

A jingly cat toy that was definitely, absolutely, completely purple.

- This is impossible!

Ellie's voice cracked.

She sat down with a THUMP that rattled the windows.

Mrs.

Whiskers's tail lashed like a whip.

- The guests are arriving soon!

My daughter will be heartbroken!

Ellie's eyes burned.

Her chest felt tight and heavy.

- I am so sorry.

I thought I could do this by myself, but I cannot even remember where I already looked.

A tear rolled down her trunk and splashed on the floor.

- Hey now, Pip fluttered down and landed gently on Ellie's head.

- Nobody said you had to do it by yourself, silly goose.

Ellie sniffled.

- What do you mean?

- I mean, I can see the ENTIRE shop from my perch up there, Pip explained.

- Every shelf, every corner, every little hiding spot.

Mrs.

Whiskers stopped pacing.

Her ears perked forward.

- And Ellie, your trunk can reach the highest shelves and the tucked-away corners where I could never look!

Something in Ellie's brain went DING!

like a bell.

- You mean work together?

- Exactly!

Pip chirped.

Ellie scrambled to her feet, hope bubbling up like soda fizz.

- Pip, can you see anything small and blue from up there?

Pip zoomed to his highest perch and swiveled his head left, then right.

- Blue dish by the lizards, blue rope near the entrance, blue ball by the counter.

WAIT!

Something tiny and blue way up on the top shelf by the cat section!

- I cannot see that high, Mrs.

Whiskers admitted.

- But I can!

Ellie stretched her trunk up, up, UP toward the ceiling.

Her trunk-tip brushed something soft and fuzzy.

She carefully wrapped around it and pulled it down.

A blue toy mouse with a silver jingly bell tumbled into Mrs.

Whiskers's waiting paws.

- YOU FOUND IT!

Mrs.

Whiskers squealed, hugging the toy tight.

But Ellie was not finished thinking.

Her brain spun with ideas, connecting dots in every direction.

- Wait!

If we work together like this, we could organize this WHOLE mixed-up shop!

Pip did three loop-de-loops in the air.

- That is absolutely bonkers!

- Bonkers BRILLIANT!

Mrs.

Whiskers corrected, her eyes sparkling.

They formed a plan.

Pip would fly high and use his sharp eyes to spot misplaced items.

Mrs.

Whiskers would use her excellent memory to remember where everything belonged.

Ellie would use her strong trunk and long reach to move things.

- Operation Un-Mix-Up starts NOW!

Ellie trumpeted.

The shop became a whirlwind of teamwork.

- Birdseed spotted behind the dog treats!

Pip called from above.

- That belongs on shelf two, next to the bird toys!

Mrs.

Whiskers directed.

- Moving it!

Ellie's trunk swung into action, placing it perfectly.

They moved like clockwork.

Pip's voice echoed through the shop, spotting treasures.

Mrs.

Whiskers remembered every single detail: which shelf, which row, which side.

Ellie's trunk became a blur, moving faster and more confidently than ever.

- Hamster wheel wedged in the fish filter!

- Shelf four, middle row!

- Got it!

When Ellie forgot what she was carrying, Mrs.

Whiskers gently reminded her.

When something was too high or too far, Ellie's trunk reached it easily.

When items were hidden in impossible places, Pip's keen eyes found them.

- Turtle food caught in the ceiling fan!

- How did THAT happen?

Ellie laughed, but she stretched up and rescued it anyway.

The shop changed before their eyes.

Cat supplies gathered together like a family reunion.

Dog items stood in neat rows.

The bird section actually looked like it belonged to birds!

Twenty minutes later, they stepped back to admire their work.

The shop gleamed.

Everything sparkled.

Everything made sense.

Mr.

Patterson walked in carrying his morning coffee.

He took one look around and his jaw dropped.

The coffee cup slipped from his fingers.

- What in the world?

- We organized it!

Pip announced proudly.

- As a team!

- Ellie figured out how to use all our strengths together, Mrs.

Whiskers explained.

Mr.

Patterson's eyes grew misty.

- I have been trying to organize this place for THREE YEARS!

You did it in one afternoon?

Ellie's trunk twisted shyly.

- I could not have done even one tiny bit by myself.

Pip spotted things I missed.

Mrs.

Whiskers remembered things I forgot.

We each brought something important.

Mr.

Patterson broke into the biggest smile.

- That is teamwork!

How would you three like to be the official Paws & Claws Organization Squad?

- YES!

they shouted together, their voices mixing into one happy sound.

Mrs.

Whiskers rubbed against Ellie's leg.

- You are not too forgetful, dear.

You needed friends to help with the remembering part.

Ellie's heart felt like it might float right out of her chest.

She had spent so long worrying about what she could not do that she had never thought about what they COULD do together.

From that day forward, Paws & Claws Pet Shop became famous throughout town for being perfectly organized.

And whenever Ellie forgot something (which happened often), she knew exactly what to do.

- Pip!

Which shelf for the turtle treats?

- Shelf five, next to the turtle food!

- Mrs.

Whiskers, what was I carrying again?

- Rabbit water bottles, sweetheart!

Ellie smiled, her trunk swinging happily.

She might always be forgetful, but she would never, ever forget the most important thing: together, they could do anything.
