## Story

Elmer's trunk bonked the ceiling-again.

- Whoops!

he trumpeted, flipping himself around.

Living in an upside-down house was tricky.

The front door hung from the ceiling like a bat.

The chandelier sprouted from the floor like a glittery mushroom.

Even the mailbox dangled above the roof.

Most elephants would figure it out after three months.

But Elmer?

He forgot which way was up at least five times a day.

He had tied reminder strings around his trunk: one for watering plants, one for his doctor's appointment, and one for something he had already forgotten.

- Being forgetful is exhausting!

he sighed.

The kitchen made Elmer's head spin.

Pots clung to the ceiling with magnets.

The refrigerator opened downward, making milk pour upward.

The stove faced sideways.

Should he cook standing up or lying down?

He could never remember.

Elmer opened a cabinet-WHOOSH!

Cereal boxes tumbled onto his head.

- Oof!

Not again!

He tried grabbing the milk.

SPLASH!

It poured straight up his nose.

- ACHOO!

Just another normal morning in his backward world.

CRASH!

BANG!

CLATTER-CLATTER-CLANG!

The noise burst in from outside.

- Help!

Somebody!

Please!

Elmer pressed his face to the window.

A tiny yellow bird spun in circles, tangled in the branches of a downward-growing tree.

The poor thing twisted tighter with each flutter.

- I cannot wiggle free!

the bird cried.

- And I am so dizzy!

Elmer's heart thumped hard.

That bird needed help, real help, and he was the only one around.

But his stomach twisted.

How could a forgetful elephant save anyone?

He could not even remember where he had put his toothbrush this morning.

Still, he had to try.

- Hang on!

I am coming!

Elmer thundered outside and skidded to a stop.

His mind swirled with confusion.

Should he reach up toward the ground?

Or down toward the sky?

- Hurry!

the bird squeaked.

- Everything's spinning!

Elmer grabbed a branch and pulled himself upward.

BONK!

His head smacked the grass.

- Ow!

Wrong way!

He tried climbing downward.

WHOOOOSH!

His feet lifted off the ground like a balloon.

- No, no, no!

He wrapped his trunk around the trunk.

SNAP!

The branch cracked.

- Yikes!

Nothing worked.

His forgetful brain could not figure out which direction was right.

The bird's voice grew quieter.

- It is okay. You tried.

Elmer slumped against the tree.

His eyes stung.

Why could not he remember things like normal elephants?

Why did everything always get jumbled in his head?

The bird's small voice drifted down.

- You know what?

I moved here because I kept getting turned around everywhere else.

I thought in a backward place, maybe I would finally fit in.

Elmer's ears perked up.

- You get turned around?

- All the time!

the bird chirped weakly.

- North, south, left, right-they all jumble together.

Elmer blinked.

Someone else who forgot things?

Then something clicked in his mind-not about which way was up, but about something better.

- Wait!

he exclaimed.

- I do not need to remember the right way. I need to use what I have got!

He looked at his long, bendy, wonderful trunk.

It could twist and reach and curl in ways no ladder ever could.

Elmer stopped worrying about directions.

He stretched his trunk toward the bird's voice, weaving it through branches like a gentle snake.

He did not think.

He listened and reached and trusted.

His trunk tip touched something soft.

- Got you!

Elmer pulled the bird free, untangling each twig gently.

He lowered her safely to the ground-or ceiling-honestly, who could tell?

The bird fluffed her yellow feathers and hopped.

- You saved me!

But how?

You could not remember which way to go!

Elmer's trunk swayed proudly.

- I could not!

So I stopped trying to remember and did it my way!

The bird's eyes sparkled.

- That is brilliant!

I am Sunny.

- I am Elmer.

Elmer the Forgetful.

Sunny tilted her head.

- I think you are Elmer the Creative!

You figured out something nobody else would have thought of!

Elmer had never considered that.

Maybe forgetting the normal way meant discovering new ways-better ways-ways that were completely his own.

- Want upside-down cookies?

he offered.

- I might forget the sugar, but they will be interesting!

Sunny hopped onto his head.

- Can we be friends?

Even though you forget things and I get turned around?

- Especially because of that!

Elmer trumpeted.

- We are perfect as we are!

They spent the afternoon making the strangest cookies ever.

Elmer forgot the flour, so they used crushed crackers.

Sunny knocked in too much cinnamon, so they added honey.

The cookies were lumpy, lopsided, and absolutely delicious.

- These are perfect!

Sunny declared.

- Just like us, Elmer agreed.

From that day forward, Elmer still forgot where he put things.

He still got confused about directions.

But he never forgot the most important thing: being different was not something to fix.

It was something to celebrate.

And the best friends welcomed you exactly as you were-forgetfulness, confusion, and all.
