## Story

In Topsy-Turvy Town, people wore pajamas to work, ate ice cream for breakfast, and said

- goodbye

when they arrived

Lorenzo Llama loved it here because everything felt perfectly backward, exactly like him.

Every morning, Lorenzo practiced his most dramatic poses in the mirror.

Neck stretched high!

Eyelashes fluttering!

Tail swooshing magnificently!

Being the town's most theatrical llama was serious business.

- Farewell!

he announced to his neighbor, Mrs.

Hedgehog, as he walked UP to her.

- See you later!

she chirped back, waving hello.

Lorenzo sighed contentedly.

Everything here made wonderful, backward sense.

Until today.

A peculiar sound drifted through his window-regular, forward-direction humming.

Lorenzo's ears shot up like fuzzy antennae.

His nostrils flared dramatically.

Through the glass, he spotted something impossible: a small rabbit hopping the WRONG way.

Forward!

Her ears pointed ahead instead of back.

She waved from left to right instead of right to left.

Lorenzo's heart hammered against his ribs.

His hooves trembled.

What if this stranger embarrassed herself?

What if everyone stared?

What if she could not fit in and felt awful?

(What if they think she is weird, the way I sometimes worry they think I am too dramatic?)

He had to investigate.

This was a CRISIS of the highest order!

Lorenzo burst through his door, galloping in proper backward circles down the street.

Past the upside-down library and the inside-out grocery store, he found the rabbit sitting by the fountain that pulled water down instead of up.

- Stop right there!

Lorenzo hollered, striking his most impressive pose-front legs crossed, neck arched, tail held high.

- You are doing EVERYTHING incorrectly!

The rabbit's smile wobbled.

- Oh!

I am Rosie.

I moved here yesterday.

I am still learning how things work.

- Well, you are learning them WRONG!

Lorenzo paced in backward figure-eights, his voice rising.

- In Topsy-Turvy Town, we have STANDARDS!

We hop backward!

We wave backward!

Even your ears are pointing the WRONG direction!

Rosie's whiskers drooped.

Her eyes grew shiny.

- I am trying my best, she whispered.

- Everything here is so different from my old home.

But Lorenzo was too busy being theatrical to notice her trembling paws.

- You cannot arrive and ignore our ways!

We do things BACKWARD here!

Like this!

He demonstrated proper backward hopping-one dramatic leap, two dramatic leaps, three-

SPLASH!

Lorenzo tumbled straight into the fountain.

The backward water did not spray out; it SUCKED IN, creating a swirling vortex that plastered his fur flat against his body.

He looked like a drowned noodle with legs.

- HELP!

His voice came out squeaky and un-dramatic.

- I cannot get out!

Rosie hopped over immediately, even though he had been mean to her.

She grabbed his tail with her teeth and PULLED.

POP!

Lorenzo flew backward, tumbling into a pretzel-shaped heap of soggy llama.

- Are you okay?

Rosie asked gently.

Lorenzo's cheeks burned hotter than the backward sun.

He had made a complete fool of himself while trying to correct someone else.

- I am fine, he mumbled, untangling his legs from his neck.

- I was demonstrating advanced backward techniques.

Rosie's mouth twitched.

A tiny giggle slipped out, that forward-direction laugh again.

But her eyes sparkled with kindness, not meanness.

- That was quite a demonstration, she said softly, offering her paw to help him up.

Lorenzo stared at her outstretched paw.

His stomach felt squirmy and uncomfortable.

- Why did you help me?

he asked quietly.

- I was rude to you.

Rosie shrugged, her forward ears bobbing.

- You made a mistake.

I make tons of mistakes here every day.

Yesterday, I said

- hello

when I was leaving the bakery, and everyone looked confused

Lorenzo's throat felt tight.

Last week, he had worn his scarf on his tail instead of his neck.

The grocer had smiled and said,

- Everyone messes up sometimes, Lorenzo. That is how we learn.

Now Lorenzo had done to Rosie exactly what he worried others might do to him: made her feel bad for being different.

- I made a mistake too, Lorenzo admitted.

His voice came out smaller than usual, without any dramatic flair.

- I was mean because you are different.

That was not kind at all.

- Want to start over?

Rosie offered.

Lorenzo nodded slowly.

He extended his hoof backward in proper Topsy-Turvy greeting.

- I am Lorenzo Llama.

Welcome to our town.

I am sorry I was not welcoming before.

Rosie shook his hoof enthusiastically (the wrong direction, but Lorenzo's heart did not mind anymore).

- Thank you!

This town is amazing, even if I am confused.

Could you maybe teach me how things work?

- You WANT to learn our backward ways?

Lorenzo's ears perked up.

- Of course!

Rosie's nose twitched hopefully.

- Maybe I could share some forward things too?

We could learn from each other!

Lorenzo's dramatic heart swelled three sizes.

Learning TOGETHER?

That sounded wonderful!

Over the next hour, Lorenzo taught Rosie backward walking (she only bumped the fountain twice, which was impressive!).

Rosie showed Lorenzo that forward hopping felt surprisingly fun.

Lorenzo demonstrated eating dessert before vegetables.

Rosie taught him that mixing forward and backward laughs created the silliest snort-giggle ever.

- You know what?

Lorenzo said, attempting a forward cartwheel and landing in a dramatic flop.

- I thought you being different would be bad.

But you are teaching me NEW things!

That is exciting!

- You are teaching me too!

Rosie said, helping him up again.

- We are both learning!

- And making mistakes!

Lorenzo added.

- And that is okay!

they said together, dissolving into mixed-direction giggles.

That evening (which the town called morning), Lorenzo had an idea.

His most dramatic idea yet.

- Come with me!

he told Rosie.

He led her to the town square, where neighbors gathered for backward breakfast (actually dinner).

Lorenzo saw them notice Rosie's forward ears and forward walk.

Some looked confused.

Others looked uncertain.

Lorenzo recognized those expressions.

He had worn them himself hours ago.

He took a slow breath and stepped forward (well, backward).

- ATTENTION, EVERYONE!

His voice boomed theatrically.

- This is my new friend Rosie!

She's new here, and she does some things differently than us!

The crowd murmured.

Lorenzo's heart thumped, but he continued.

- I made a big mistake today.

When I met Rosie, I was not kind.

I thought different meant wrong.

But different means different!

And different can teach us amazing new things!

The mayor, wearing his slippers on his ears as usual, waddled over.

- Does she like dessert for breakfast?

he asked suspiciously.

- I LOVE dessert for breakfast!

Rosie exclaimed.

- Though I also love breakfast for dessert!

- Ooh!

whispered the baker.

- I never thought of that!

- And she taught me that trying new things can be exciting, Lorenzo added proudly.

- It is actually fun!

I learned a forward cartwheel today!

- Did you land on your face?

asked Mrs.

Hedgehog.

- Three times!

Lorenzo grinned.

- But Rosie showed me that making mistakes is how we learn!

The mayor's face crinkled into a smile.

- Well, is not that something!

Welcome to Topsy-Turvy Town, Rosie!

Sounds like you are teaching us that there are many wonderful ways to be ourselves!

The crowd cheered (backward cheers, which sound delightfully strange).

Rosie's eyes sparkled with happy tears.

- Thank you for welcoming me as I am!

- Thank YOU for teaching me!

Lorenzo said.

- I learned that being kind matters more than being the same.

And that we all make mistakes while we are learning!

The baker brought out a backward cake (you ate from the inside out).

The teacher brought forward cookies (regular ones).

Everyone shared, mixing forward and backward treats together.

Lorenzo watched Rosie laughing with the neighbors, her forward giggle blending with their backward chuckles.

His heart felt wonderfully full and mixed-up in the best way.

- Hey, Lorenzo!

Rosie called.

- Come show everyone that backward cartwheel thing!

- You mean the one where I splash into fountains?

Lorenzo asked.

- Exactly!

That was the BEST part!

Lorenzo grinned his most dramatic grin.

He trotted over, ready to make mistakes, try new things, and learn alongside his new friend.

Because that is what he had discovered today: Topsy-Turvy Town was not only about doing things backward.

It was about opening your heart forward to everyone who arrived, welcoming them exactly as they were, and learning together along the way.

Even if it meant falling into fountains sometimes.

Especially if it meant falling into fountains sometimes.
