## Story

Lorenzo Llama draped one hoof across his forehead and gasped at the sky.

- This is the MOST ABSURD house in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE!

The house looked like a giant had sneezed and accidentally flipped it over.

The roof stabbed into the dirt.

Windows stared at the ground.

The front door dangled where a ceiling should be, creaking in the wind.

- Help!

squeaked a voice from inside.

- Is anybody there?

Lorenzo's ears perked up.

Someone needed saving!

Finally, his chance to be MAGNIFICENT!

He pictured crowds cheering, banners waving, everyone chanting his name.

Through the doorway, everything looked wrong.

Chairs clung to the ceiling.

Stairs spiraled the wrong direction.

Even the paintings hung backward.

- Whoever lives here, Lorenzo sniffed, - clearly does not know the PROPER way to have a house.

Lorenzo stepped inside.

His hooves hit the smooth ceiling-floor and-WHOOSH!-slid sideways like butter on a hot pan.

- DISASTER!

he shrieked, skidding into a coat rack.

Scarves scattered everywhere.

A hat landed on his nose.

His long neck tangled in three umbrellas.

He looked like a thoroughly confused, fuzzy octopus.

- Hello?

the voice called.

- I need help in the kitchen!

Lorenzo wiggled free and wobbled toward the sound.

The kitchen made his brain hurt.

Pots floated upward from the floor.

The sink hung from above.

A kettle sat on the ceiling, steam curling downward like backward smoke.

Dangling from a cabinet handle was a tiny purple bat wearing sparkly glasses.

- Oh, wonderful!

the bat chirped.

- I am Beatrice!

My wing caught when I reached for my teacup!

- No worries!

Lorenzo boomed, puffing his chest.

- I shall save you with my SPECTACULAR llama powers!

He reared up on his back legs and stretched his neck toward Beatrice.

CLANG!

His head bonged into a hanging pot.

CRASH!

His hooves swept six plates off the ceiling-counter.

THUMP!

He tripped over a rolling orange and collapsed in a furry pile.

Beatrice winced.

- Maybe try something different?

Lorenzo's ears drooped.

Different?

But HIS way was perfect!

HIS way was amazing!

HIS way was making everything worse.

He stared at the backward kitchen.

Everything here worked opposite.

When he walked normal, he tipped.

When he reached normal, he crashed.

A wobbly feeling filled his stomach.

Lorenzo did not like not knowing what to do.

He liked being RIGHT and IMPRESSIVE and CORRECT.

- Beatrice, he whispered, - how do you move around in here?

- Oh!

Beatrice's eyes sparkled behind her glasses.

- I do not walk!

I swing from handles and glide along the ceiling-floor.

This house feels perfectly normal to ME!

Lorenzo blinked three times.

Normal?

This topsy-turvy chaos felt NORMAL?

That was the silliest, strangest, most ridiculous thing he had ever heard.

But then a tiny idea tickled his brain: ridiculous did not mean wrong.

Maybe it meant not like him.

His chest felt tight.

He had never thought about houses being right in different ways before.

- Could you teach me?

Lorenzo asked, much quieter than usual.

- Yes!

Beatrice beamed.

- First, stop standing straight.

In here, wobbly IS straight!

Lorenzo tried again.

This time he leaned sideways like Beatrice said.

He hooked his long neck around drawer handles instead of using his hooves.

He stopped thinking about the

- right

way and

tried new things.

- Perfect!

Beatrice encouraged.

- Now swing your neck to that big handle near me!

Lorenzo swung-WHEEE!-and grabbed the cabinet door with his teeth.

He tugged it open enough for Beatrice to wiggle free.

But his teeth caught in the handle!

And Beatrice's other wing caught on a different latch!

- OH NO!

Lorenzo wailed.

- This is AWFUL!

This is WORSE THAN BEFORE!

This is-

- Wait!

Beatrice interrupted.

- What if we work TOGETHER?

She pointed with her free wing.

- See that long wooden spoon on the floor-ceiling?

Your incredible neck could reach it, and I could grab it with my feet.

We could make a bridge!

Together?

Lorenzo had never rescued anyone together before.

Heroes worked BY THEMSELVES!

Heroes were SOLO!

Heroes were-

Heroes were currently tangled and needed help.

Lorenzo's stomach felt funny.

Asking for help seemed not heroic.

But staying tangled seemed worse.

- Okay, he said softly.

- Let us try your idea.

Lorenzo stretched his neck (which truly WAS impressive).

His teeth caught the spoon's handle.

Beatrice gripped the other end with her tiny feet.

The spoon became a bridge between them.

Beatrice swung across, landing gently on Lorenzo's fuzzy back.

Then she used her wing to unhook his teeth from the cabinet.

They tumbled onto the floor-ceiling together, but this time it felt graceful, like a silly dance.

- WE DID IT!

they shouted.

Lorenzo's heart felt warm and fizzy.

Not because he had been the hero.

Because they had been a TEAM.

- Your upside-down house is not absurd, Lorenzo said quietly.

- It is yours.

And your way of doing things works perfectly for you.

- Really?

Beatrice adjusted her sparkly glasses.

- Most animals say it is too weird and wrong.

- I thought that too, Lorenzo admitted.

His ears felt hot.

- I thought MY way was the only right way.

But your way is wonderful for YOU.

And when we mixed our different ways together, we were amazing!

Beatrice grinned.

- Want to see the rest of my house?

I could show you my upside-down tricks, and you could tell me about right-side-up houses?

- ABSOLUTELY!

Lorenzo declared (because some drama never disappears).

- But first, how do we get OUT of this kitchen?

They looked at each other and burst into giggles that bounced off the topsy-turvy walls.

Together, they figured it out.

Lorenzo's height reached the door handle.

Beatrice's swinging showed them the path.

They tumbled into the sunshine, laughing the whole way.

From that day forward, Lorenzo visited every week.

He learned to love the upside-down house's wonderful weirdness.

He practiced thinking:

- different

instead of:

- wrong

And when new animals moved to town-whether they hopped backward, crawled sideways, or slithered in zigzags-Lorenzo was always first to say:

- Welcome!

You are PERFECTLY wonderful EXACTLY as you are!

Because Lorenzo discovered something more magnificent than any solo rescue: being the kind of friend who celebrated everyone, differences and all.
