## Story

In the town of Wrongway-Round, where clocks ticked counterclockwise and flowers grew roots-up, a golden puppy named Pepper zoomed down Reverse Street.

Her tongue flopped sideways as she ran.

She spotted Mrs.

Whiskers reading on her porch.

Pepper's heart did seventeen backflips.

A FRIEND!

- HELLOOOOO!

Pepper barked, launching herself forward.

WHOMP!

Mrs.

Whiskers catapulted off her chair.

Her book sailed into a rosebush.

- Gracious!

the cat wheezed, fur poking out like she had rubbed a balloon.

Pepper bounced three times.

- That was AMAZING!

Want to do it again?

Mrs.

Whiskers fled, her tail puffed like a bottle brush.

Pepper's ears drooped.

But only for a second.

Surely someone ELSE would want to play!

At the topsy-turvy school, Barnaby the turtle balanced homework papers on his shell.

Each paper was written completely backwards, as was proper in Wrongway-Round.

Pepper galloped toward him, her paws drumming the ground like parade drums.

- BARNABY!

LET US PLAY TAG!

- Actually, I am rather bus-

CRASH!

Pepper smacked into his shell.

Barnaby spun like a coin.

Papers erupted into the air, swirling like snow.

- I will catch them!

Pepper announced.

She leaped and chomped.

CHOMP!

RIP!

SHRED!

The papers drifted down in puppy-tooth-sized pieces.

Barnaby's head disappeared into his shell.

- Please go, came his muffled voice.

Pepper sat down hard.

Her tail stopped wagging.

Something cold settled in her stomach.

Why did not anyone want to be friends?

At the silly circus tent, Olive the owl swooped in backwards loops, her wings barely whispering.

Pepper crept inside, moving slower this time.

She would be SUPER helpful now!

A rope dangled nearby.

Maybe it controlled the spotlight?

That would help Olive see better!

Pepper grabbed it with her teeth and yanked.

FWOOOOOSH!

The entire curtain collapsed.

Fabric swallowed Olive mid-flight.

- WHOO-WHOO-WHOOOA!

The owl tumbled down, wrapped like a backwards burrito, landing with a muffled THUMP.

Pepper's stomach twisted into a knot.

Her paws felt like stones.

She slunk behind the circus wagon and curled into the smallest ball possible.

A puddle reflected her image, but in Wrongway-Round, puddles showed everything opposite.

Her reflection grinned while real-Pepper's eyes leaked tears.

- That is not how I feel at all, she whispered.

Voices drifted from the other side of the wagon.

Pepper's ears twitched.

- Poor little thing, Mrs.

Whiskers said softly.

Pepper held perfectly still.

- She does not mean harm, Barnaby added.

- She has not learned to listen yet, Olive hooted.

- Everyone deserves friends.

Even hurricane puppies.

Pepper's breath caught.

They were not angry?

- Maybe we should teach her, Mrs.

Whiskers suggested.

- Instead of hiding.

Something warm flickered in Pepper's chest.

They wanted to HELP?

She stood on wobbly legs and walked-actually walked, not bounced-around the wagon.

Three pairs of eyes turned toward her.

- I am sorry, Pepper said, her voice barely a whisper.

- I get so excited that my brain forgets to work.

- Brains need practice too, Barnaby said gently.

Pepper's tail gave one tiny, hopeful wag.

- Could you teach me?

I truly want to learn.

Mrs.

Whiskers' whiskers twitched.

- We will try.

But you must practice every single day.

- I will!

Pepper promised.

They started immediately.

Mrs.

Whiskers taught Pepper to count to five before greeting anyone.

Pepper vibrated like a washing machine, but she counted: one, two, three.

Barnaby showed her to watch for signals.

Head out meant

- yes.

Head in meant:

- not now

Olive taught the magic words:

- Is now a good time?

Pepper's whole body jiggled with the effort.

Waiting felt like holding in a thousand sneezes.

But she practiced.

And practiced.

And practiced some more.

The next morning, she saw Barnaby carrying another homework stack.

Every muscle screamed POUNCE!

But Pepper stopped three feet away.

- Is now a good time to say hello?

she asked, her voice squeaky.

Barnaby's face brightened.

- Yes!

But gently, please.

Pepper crept forward and gave the gentlest nose-boop in puppy history.

Barnaby smiled.

- Perfect!

Pepper's tail wagged at half-speed.

She had done it!

The next backwards-morning, sirens wailed at the Wrongway-Round Bakery.

The baker had mixed his backwards recipe wrong, and now a purple cake was growing instead of shrinking.

Frosting oozed through the door like sticky lava.

- HELP!

the baker yelled.

- It will swallow the town!

Mrs.

Whiskers tried reading the recipe backwards-backwards.

Barnaby attempted eating through the cake, but it grew faster.

Olive flew in worried circles.

Pepper's body trembled.

Every instinct screamed RUN!

JUMP!

DO SOMETHING!

But she forced herself to stop.

To breathe.

To think.

She spotted the giant whisk on the wall.

The backwards-fountain in the square.

Olive's spinning trick from the circus.

An idea sparked.

- I have a plan, Pepper said clearly.

- But I need help.

Will you listen?

Three heads turned toward her.

- We are listening, Mrs.

Whiskers said.

Pepper explained step by step, asking questions, listening to ideas.

Together, they became a team.

Barnaby pushed the giant whisk to the fountain.

Mrs.

Whiskers turned the backwards-faucet, making water spray in ridiculous zigzags.

Olive flew the whisk full of water over the cake.

And Pepper, using every ounce of her puppy energy for good, ran in circles around the cake.

Faster and faster, creating a backwards-whirlwind that mixed water into purple dough.

SPLOOOOOSH!

SPLISH!

SPLASH!

The cake stopped growing.

Then, following Wrongway-Round's backwards rules, it shrank!

Smaller and smaller until it was perfectly cake-sized.

The town cheered by booing (which meant

- hooray!

in Wrongway-Round)

Pepper's tail wagged at a controlled, friendship-appropriate speed.

Being enthusiastic was not bad. It was her special gift.

She needed to mix it with listening and thinking about others.

- Thank you for teaching me, she said.

- That is what friends do, Barnaby replied.

- We help each other learn.

Mrs.

Whiskers nodded.

- Your energy saved us today!

Pepper smiled, knowing that friendship meant learning together and mixing everyone's gifts into something wonderful.

Just like a cake.

Or in Wrongway-Round, exactly like a ekac.
