## Story

## Lily's Mermaid Dream

Lily loved the ocean from the edge of her beach blanket.

She liked the hush of the waves, the soft crunch of shells, and the way sunlight turned wet sand silver.

Most of all, Lily loved mermaids.

She arranged her shells in a circle on the blanket.

"This one is my palace," she said, pointing to a smooth pink shell.

"This one is my tail," she said, choosing a long silver shell.

Then she closed her eyes.

In her mind, the blanket became a warm blue lagoon. Her legs became a shining mermaid tail, and the shells became windows in a coral cove.

## Under the Sea

Tiny fish flickered around Lily like bits of ribbon.

"Welcome," said a yellow fish. "We are building a cove."

"May I help?" Lily asked.

A turtle showed her where to place flat stones for a path. Two dolphins carried a strand of seaweed like a ribbon. A crab patted sand around the base of a shell tower.

Lily placed her silver shell at the entrance.

"A moon gate," said the yellow fish.

The cove looked bright, but one corner stayed empty.

"Who lives there?" Lily asked.

## The Shy Octopus

A small octopus peered from behind a rock. Only one eye showed.

"That is Oona," whispered the turtle. "She wants to help, but she worries her arms will knock things over."

Lily remembered how hard it was to build tall shell towers without tipping them.

"Would you like to hold this seaweed ribbon?" Lily asked. "It needs many gentle arms."

Oona reached out one careful arm. Then another. Soon she was weaving the ribbon through the shell windows without knocking down a single tower.

"You made the cove softer," Lily said.

Oona blushed purple-pink.

## Friends Forever

The lagoon began to glow gold. In the real world, Lily could feel warm sun on her blanket.

"Do you have to go?" asked the yellow fish.

"For lunch," Lily said. "But I can visit in my imagination."

The dolphins dipped their noses. The turtle waved one flipper. Oona tucked a tiny shell beside the moon gate.

"For next time," Oona said.

Lily waved until the lagoon shimmered away.

When she opened her eyes, the shells were still on the blanket. The tiny shell from Oona was the smallest white one near her knee.

## Seashells on the Blanket

Mom sat beside Lily with sandwiches and apple slices.

"You were so quiet," Mom said. "Where did you go?"

"Under the sea," said Lily. "But only the pretend part."

She showed Mom the shell palace, the moon gate, and the seaweed ribbon.

"Oona helped with this part," Lily said.

"She has a careful touch," Mom said.

After lunch, Lily added one more shell to the cove. Then she closed her eyes and listened for the dolphins.
