## Story

## A Day at the Beach

Jack and Jenny reached the beach with sunscreen on their noses and buckets bumping against their knees.

After a splash in the shallow water with Mom watching nearby, Jack dropped to the warm sand.

"Castle time," he said.

"Palace time," said Jenny.

They chose a flat place above the wet tide line. Jack wanted tall walls. Jenny wanted shell windows and a seaweed garden.

"We can build both," Jenny said.

Jack pressed his bucket into the sand and lifted it carefully. A tower stood up, lumpy but proud.

## Building Castles

Jack built the first wall with both hands. Jenny smoothed the second wall with her shovel.

"Mine needs a gate," Jack said.

"Mine needs a balcony," Jenny said.

They worked side by side. When Jack's tower cracked, Jenny brought wetter sand. When Jenny's balcony sagged, Jack packed a little mound beneath it.

"Now the gate can lead to the balcony," Jack said.

"And the balcony can look over your wall," said Jenny.

Their two castles began to look like one kingdom.

## Creatures Visiting the Kingdom

Tiny crabs hurried near the rocks, leaving pin-dot tracks in the sand.

"The kingdom has visitors," Jenny whispered.

"Careful visitors," said Jack. "We should not chase them."

A gull landed beyond the castle and inspected a strand of seaweed.

"Maybe that is the royal gull inspector," Jenny said.

Jack gave the gull a serious nod. "Inspection begins now."

The gull pecked the sand once, decided there was no snack, and flew away.

"We passed," Jenny said.

They made a tiny road around the crab tracks so the crabs could keep their own path.

## Moats Around the Castles

The tide crept closer.

"Water is coming to visit," Jack said.

"Then it needs a path," said Jenny.

They dug a moat around the front wall. Jack scooped. Jenny shaped. Mom helped them check that they stayed above the safe line on the beach.

The next little wave filled the moat and shimmered there.

"A silver path," Jenny said.

Jack added a shell bridge. Jenny pressed two pebbles beside it.

"Bridge guards," she said.

## Dragons Over the Sand

Clouds moved over the sun and made dragon shapes on the sand.

"That one has wings," Jack said, pointing up.

"That one is bringing rain for the seaweed garden," Jenny said.

They did not need swords or risky quests. A dragon could be a cloud. A moat could be a silver path. A shell could be a window.

Dad made a low growling sound from behind his book.

Jenny looked at Jack. Jack looked at Jenny.

"Friendly sea dragon," they said together.

Dad grinned. "May I visit the kingdom?"

## The Finished Kingdom

By snack time, the kingdom had two towers, one bridge, five shell windows, and a seaweed flag that leaned into the breeze.

"We made it better together," Jenny said.

"Your balcony needed my wall," Jack said.

"Your wall needed my wet sand," Jenny said.

A younger child watched from a nearby blanket.

"Do you want to make a tiny house for the crab road?" Jenny asked.

The child nodded. Soon three careful hands were patting sand into a little round hut.

## The Sea Gets a Turn

When the tide reached the bridge, Jack did not rush to save it.

"The sea gets the kingdom now," he said.

Jenny collected the loose shells and set them back above the tide line.

"Tomorrow we can build a taller tower," she said.

"And a wider crab road," said Jack.

The first wave softened the wall. The second wave filled the moat. The third wave turned the castle back into smooth beach.

Jack and Jenny carried their buckets home, already planning the next kingdom.
