## Story

## The Talking Seashells

On Mooncup Beach, the smallest seashells could whisper.

They did not shout. They did not sing for crowds. They waited in the warm sand and helped children remember careful things.

Lily came to the beach with her family, a red towel, and a blue bucket. Before she ran to play, Dad pointed to the tall lifeguard flag.

"If we get mixed up," Dad said, "stop near the flag or ask the lifeguard for help."

Lily nodded. Then she built one tower, then another, then followed a trail of pearly shells a few steps down the sand.

When she looked up, she could not see the red towel.

"Oh," Lily whispered.

"Breathe first," said a tiny voice by her foot.

Lily looked down. A striped shell wiggled in the sand.

"I am Sam," said the shell. "Are you feeling mixed up?"

Lily nodded.

"Then we do not wander farther," Sam said. "We stay where helpers can find us."

## Bravery and Kindness

Lily sat beside the tall flag where Dad had pointed. Her hands still felt shaky, so Sam counted with her.

"One wave in," Sam said.

"One wave out," Lily whispered.

A little boy with sandy knees stood nearby, rubbing his eyes.

"I cannot find my grandma," he said.

Lily wanted to run and search. Then she remembered Sam's words.

"We should stay by the flag," Lily said. "The lifeguard is right there."

She waved to the lifeguard in the yellow shirt.

"We need help," Lily called. "I am Lily, and this is a boy looking for his grandma."

The lifeguard came over at once and knelt so both children could hear her.

"You did the right thing," she said. "You stayed by the flag and asked a helper."

## Sam Stays Beside Lily

The lifeguard used her radio. A moment later, a woman in a sun hat hurried along the sand.

"Nico!" she called, opening her arms.

The little boy ran to her. Lily smiled, but her stomach still felt twisty.

"What about my family?" she asked.

"We will call for them too," said the lifeguard.

Sam nestled beside Lily's sandal.

"You remembered the plan," he whispered. "That is brave enough for one beach day."

The lifeguard spoke clearly into the radio. "We have Lily at the main flag. Blue bucket. Red towel family."

Lily held her bucket handle with both hands and watched the people on the sand.

Then Mom appeared near the snack stand. Dad was right behind her.

"Lily!" Mom called.

## A Joyful Reunion

Lily ran only when the lifeguard nodded. Mom hugged her close. Dad crouched beside them, his face soft and worried.

"I followed the shell trail too far," Lily said. "Then I stayed by the flag."

"That was the safest choice," Dad said.

"And I asked the lifeguard," Lily added.

Mom thanked the lifeguard. Lily looked down for Sam.

The little shell winked from the sand.

"Thank you," Lily whispered.

"Anytime," Sam whispered back. "But next time, bring the shell trail to your grown-ups."

Lily laughed. She carried her blue bucket back to the red towel, holding Mom's hand on one side and Dad's hand on the other.
