## Story

## Looking for the Path

Once upon a time, there was a little fawn who loved to play in the forest with her mother. She would follow her around, watching as she nibbled on leaves and drank from streams. But one day, something unexpected happened.

As they were walking through the trees, Fawn saw a butterfly fluttering by and followed it without realizing how far she had gone. When she turned back around, her mother was nowhere to be seen! Worry rose in her chest as she realized that she could not see the path in the wide forest.

Fawn started calling out for her mother but only heard echoes of her own voice bouncing off trees. Her heart raced as worry filled her mind. She had never felt so anxious in all of her life!

Other animals started appearing! A friendly rabbit hopped over to ask what was wrong while squirrels chattered excitedly about finding Mama Deer's tracks earlier that day.

Fawn set off into the forest with Rabbit leading the way while Squirrels scurried along beside them pointing out landmarks along the path.

They followed tracks through the moss until they found Mama Deer resting beneath a fallen tree trunk. Reunited at last with tears streaming down their faces (well maybe not from Rabbit!), they hugged each other tightly, grateful for the friends who had helped when the forest felt too wide.

Fawn leaned into Mama Deer's warm side and looked back at Rabbit and the squirrels. The forest still felt wide, but now it was full of helpers too.

## Rabbit and Squirrels to the Rescue

Fawn was wandering around in circles, getting more worried by the minute. She had no idea where her mother was, and she missed her very much. Then a rabbit hopped up beside her.

"Hello there! What is the matter?" asked Rabbit cheerfully.

"I cannot see the path," said Fawn with a sniffle. "I cannot find my mommy."

Rabbit's big ears perked up. "Do not worry, we will help you find her!" he said reassuringly.

Just then, some squirrels appeared from behind a nearby tree. They had been gathering acorns for winter when they overheard Fawn's distress call.

"We know these woods like the back of our paws," said Mama Squirrel kindly. "We will start with the creek where deer often stop to drink."

With that, Rabbit and Squirrels set off through the forest with Fawn trailing behind them. The rabbits showed off their impressive hops as they bounded over bushes while Mama Squirrel scurried between trees pointing out landmarks along the way.

As they walked farther into the forest, Fawn began to feel calmer knowing that she had new friends helping her search for Mommy Deer.

The group finally came upon a bubbling creek which Mama Squirrel explained would be an excellent place for deer to drink water on hot days like this one.

## The Wise Old Owl

The group of forest friends had been searching carefully for Mama Deer. They looked under bushes, over rocks, and across clearings to get a better view. But still, there was no sign of her.

As they walked through an open meadow, Rabbit decided to take a break from the search and catch his breath. Fawn sat down beside him and let out a little sigh.

Just then, wings passed overhead and they looked up to see an owl perched in a nearby tree. "Hello there," said Rabbit cheerfully. "Do you happen to know where we can find Mama Deer?"

The owl hooted softly before replying with some cryptic advice: "Sometimes things are not as they seem." And with that he spread his wings and flew off into the night.

Rabbit scratched his head in confusion while Fawn tilted her head curiously at the departing bird. What did he mean? Was it some sort of riddle?

After pondering for a while longer on what the old owl meant, Rabbit finally spoke up. "I think I understand now! Maybe Mama Deer is closer than we think."

Fawn's eyes widened as she realized that Rabbit's words may be true - perhaps her mother was resting nearby all along! They set off again determined to find Mama Deer once more!

As they continued through the forest following this new insight from the wise old owl, both Fawn and Rabbit began feeling more confident about finding Mama Deer.

## The Search Continues

The next morning, Rabbit woke up early and determined to find Mama Deer at any cost. He knew how much Fawn missed her mother and he was willing to do whatever it takes to help them reunite.

Fawn followed bravely behind him as they moved through the forest. They passed by many trees, bushes, creeks, and rocks. Everything looked quite different from what Fawn remembered. But she trusted Rabbit completely and kept following his lead.

As they walked, Rabbit pointed out interesting things for Fawn to see - a family of rabbits hopping through the grass; a woodpecker pecking away on a tree trunk; a group of colorful butterflies fluttering around some flowers.

Despite all these distractions, both Rabbit and Fawn stayed focused on their mission: finding Mama Deer. They checked the creek bank, the mossy rocks, and the narrow deer path, but there was still no clear sign of which way she had gone.

When the search felt especially hard, Rabbit noticed something - a faint trail leading off toward the east! Without hesitation, he ran ahead with Fawn close behind him until they reached an enormous pile of leaves rustling like someone moving around inside them!

## Reunited with Mama Deer

As Fawn and Rabbit walked through the forest, they came upon an enormous pile of leaves that rustled like someone moving around inside them! They approached it slowly, unsure of what they might find. Then, carefully peeling back layer after layer revealed a surprising sight - Mama Deer herself!

Mama had been resting under all those leaves after falling asleep during an afternoon nap. When she woke up and saw that her little one was nowhere to be found, she grew worried and began looking for Fawn everywhere.

But now they were reunited at last! Fawn ran over to her mother and nuzzled against her soft fur as Mama licked her face affectionately. Rabbit looked on with a smile, happy to have played a role in bringing them back together again.

## What They Remembered

Fawn pressed close to Mama Deer and looked back at Rabbit, the squirrels, and Owl. The forest had felt confusing when she was by herself, but each helper had made the path home a little clearer.

She had felt unsure in the woods, but Rabbit's offer of assistance and the squirrels' guidance had carried her through the hardest parts.

Even when the trees had seemed endless, Fawn had kept calling, listening, and taking the next careful step.

That night, Fawn stayed close beside Mama Deer while Rabbit and the squirrels waved goodbye. The forest still felt enormous, but now she knew it was full of neighbors who would answer when someone called for help.
