A Tale of True Friendship

The afternoon sun warmed Rory Rabbit’s whiskers as he sat alone on his favorite park bench, carefully sketching the purple coneflowers that danced in the breeze. His ears twitched at the sound of happy squeals coming from the new rope bridge swaying between the tall oak trees. Other animals bounded across fearlessly, but just watching made Rory’s paws tremble.

They spent the afternoon drawing together, sharing colored pencils and giggling over wobbly lines. As golden sunlight filtered through the leaves, Nutkin bounced up excitedly. — Let’s go draw from the rope bridge! The view of the whole park would be perfect! Rory’s stomach twisted into knots. The bridge swayed gently in the breeze, looking impossibly high and dangerous. — Oh, um, I just remembered I need to… organize my carrot collection! He gathered his supplies so quickly he dropped his pencils twice, then hopped away, leaving Nutkin staring after him with hurt and confusion in his eyes

The next morning, Rory was sketching alone again when a strong gust of wind snatched one of Nutkin’s practice drawings from yesterday. The paper sailed through the air like a leaf, landing right in the middle of the rope bridge. Nutkin scampered after it without hesitation, but halfway across, the bridge swayed sharply. — Help! Nutkin squeaked, clinging to the ropes with wide eyes — I’m stuck! The bridge is moving too much!

Rory’s heart pounded against his ribs. His friend needed help, but his paws felt rooted to the ground. He opened his mouth to call for someone else, but the park was empty except for them. Nutkin’s voice softened with sudden understanding. — Are you afraid of the bridge, Rory? That’s okay - I was terrified to show you my drawings yesterday. Everyone’s scared of something. We can be brave together.

Rory clutched his sketchbook close, drawing strength from the familiar feel of paper and pencils. Taking a deep breath, he placed one trembling paw on the first plank. Then another. The bridge creaked softly beneath him. — You’re doing great! Nutkin encouraged — Just a few more hops. We can hold paws and go back together. Step by careful step, Rory made his way to Nutkin. When their paws finally touched, both friends broke into relieved grins.
