## Story

Every morning, Bailey the golden retriever would wake up when sunlight touched his nose.

He would stretch his legs, pad down the hall, and press his wet nose against Mom's hand.

Then came breakfast, a walk around the block, and belly rubs on the living room rug.

Life made sense.

Life was good.

But this morning felt different.

Mom's belly had grown round over the past months, and now Dad was rushing around with a small suitcase.

His hands moved fast, checking his watch, then the car keys, then his watch again.

"Be a good boy, Bailey," Mom said, scratching behind his ears.

Her voice sounded tight and excited at the same time.

Bailey tilted his head, trying to understand.

Then they left.

Grandma came instead, but she did not know Bailey's routines.

She filled his water bowl too high.

She threw his tennis ball only three times instead of seven.

She sat in Dad's chair at dinner.

Bailey curled up by the front door and waited.

Two days passed before Mom and Dad returned.

When the car pulled into the driveway, Bailey's tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled.

But when the door opened, everything changed.

They brought someone new.

Someone small who made strange crying sounds.

A baby.

Bailey sniffed the air.

The house smelled different now.

Like powder and milk and something sweet he could not name.

Mom and Dad hovered over the tiny creature wrapped in a yellow blanket, speaking in soft, high voices Bailey had never heard them use before.

"Meet your baby sister, Bailey," Dad said.

"Her name is Emma."

Bailey wagged his tail slowly, unsure.

He wanted to be happy.

He wanted to be the good boy Mom asked him to be.

But nobody seemed to notice he was there.

The next week, everything revolved around Emma.

She cried at night, and Mom would stumble past Bailey's bed without stopping.

She needed her bottle every few hours, and Dad would heat it up, forgetting Bailey's morning treat.

The living room rug where Bailey used to get belly rubs now had a bouncy chair and a play mat with dangling toys.

Bailey tried to adjust.

He really did.

One afternoon, when Emma was crying and crying, Bailey picked up his tennis ball and dropped it at Mom's feet.

Maybe if he reminded her about their walks, about their old routine, things could go back to normal.

"Not now, Bailey," Mom said, bouncing Emma gently.

"Please. I am so tired."

Her eyes had circles underneath that Bailey had never seen before.

Bailey's tail drooped.

He picked up his ball and walked to his bed in the corner, curling into a tight circle.

His spot by the window felt smaller somehow.

That night, Bailey heard something that made his ears stand straight up.

Emma was crying, but it sounded different this time.

Sharper.

More urgent.

Mom's footsteps hurried down the hall.

"She is burning up," Mom said, her voice tight.

"We need to take her to the hospital. Now."

Hospital.

That word again.

That was where Mom and Dad had gone before, and they had come back with Emma.

But Mom's voice did not sound excited this time.

It sounded worried.

More rushing.

More footsteps.

Then the front door closed, and the house fell silent except for Grandma's soft breathing in the guest room.

Bailey could not sleep.

He paced the hallway, stopping at Emma's room.

Her door stood open, and moonlight spilled across the empty crib.

The mobile with its dangling stars turned slowly from the heating vent's breeze.

Bailey walked inside and sat down beside the crib.

Something inside him shifted as he looked at that empty space.

Emma needed Mom and Dad right now.

She needed them more than he did.

And when she came home, she would still need them.

She was so small.

So helpless.

She could not even hold her own head up or fetch a tennis ball or bark when strangers came to the door.

But Bailey could do all those things.

He was big and strong.

He knew how to wait.

He knew how to be patient.

Maybe being a good boy meant something different now.

Maybe it meant protecting instead of playing.

Maybe it meant giving instead of getting.

Bailey stayed by the crib until sunrise, keeping watch over the empty room.

When Mom and Dad came home the next afternoon, Emma was sleeping peacefully in Mom's arms.

Her cheeks were pink again instead of red and hot.

"The medicine worked," Dad said, setting down the diaper bag.

He sank onto the couch, his shoulders slumping with relief.

Bailey approached slowly, his tail wagging gently.

He had been thinking all night about what to do.

About who he wanted to be in this new family.

Instead of dropping his tennis ball at their feet, he went to the toy basket in the corner.

He carefully picked up Emma's soft rattle with his mouth and brought it to Mom, laying it beside her on the couch.

Mom's eyes grew shiny with tears, but she was smiling.

"Oh, Bailey. You are such a good boy. Such a good big brother."

Big brother.

That was a new name.

Bailey's tail wagged faster.

He liked how it sounded.

Dad reached over and scratched Bailey's favorite spot behind his ears.

"We have been so busy, buddy. I am sorry. How about a walk later? Just you and me."

Bailey licked Dad's hand.

Later was okay.

Later was good enough.

Emma needed them now, and that was okay too.

Over the next few weeks, Bailey discovered his new routine.

Morning walks came a bit later now, after Emma's first feeding.

Belly rubs happened while Mom nursed Emma on the couch, and Bailey learned to rest his head on Mom's knee while she rocked.

His most important job became lying beside Emma's bouncy chair, keeping watch while she slept.

He was her guardian.

Her protector.

Her big brother.

One afternoon, Emma's hand reached out and grabbed Bailey's ear.

It did not hurt, but it surprised him.

He stayed very still, letting her tiny fingers explore his soft fur.

She made a sound that was not crying.

It was almost like laughing.

"Look at that," Mom said, reaching for her camera.

"She loves you, Bailey."

Bailey's tail thumped against the floor.

The house still smelled like powder and milk.

His food bowl was still in a different spot.

But those things did not bother him anymore.

Home was not about everything staying the same.

Home was about making room for new people to love.

Bailey rested his head on his paws, watching Emma's chest rise and fall with each tiny breath.

He had been worried that everything would change forever, that he would lose his place in the family.

But he had not lost anything.

His family had just grown bigger.

And so had his heart.

Being a good boy meant being there when someone needed you.

Even when it was hard.

Even when it meant waiting your turn.

Even when your whole world turned upside down.

Bailey closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of the afternoon sun on his fur and the gentle weight of Emma's hand still resting on his head.

Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is make room for change.
