# Pepper's First Day Friend

_Finding Courage Within_

When Pepper the dog faces her first day at her owner's new school, she discovers that being the new one is hard for everyone, including Marcus, a boy with crutches who is trying to find his place. By choosing honesty about her worries and bravery in reaching out despite them, Pepper helps both of them discover that courage means taking that first step anyway.

## Story

Pepper's nose had always known the morning rhythm.

Wake when Jamie's alarm buzzed.

Nudge his sleepy hand.

Race downstairs for breakfast, grape jelly toast for Jamie and kibble for her, then watch from the porch as the yellow bus carried him away.

But this morning, Jamie wore a stiff navy uniform she had never sniffed before.

- You are coming with us now, Mom said, scratching Pepper's ears.

- I got the job at Riverside Elementary.

You will stay in my office while I work.

Pepper's tail drooped.

Office?

What about their porch?

Their yard?

Their everything?

The school parking lot buzzed with car doors slamming and sneakers slapping pavement.

Kids shouted greetings to friends they had not seen all summer.

Pepper pressed against Jamie's leg as they walked toward the tall brick building.

Mom pulled gently on her leash, guiding her toward a side entrance.

- No pets in classrooms, sweetie, Jamie said, kneeling down.

His voice wobbled.

Pepper's chest felt hollow as he disappeared through those tall doors.

Mrs.

Chen's office smelled sharp-lemon cleaner and copy machine toner instead of home.

The clock above the desk ticked too loud.

Through the window, Pepper could see Jamie's classroom.

He sat between a girl with bouncy curls and a boy in bright red sneakers, already laughing together.

Pepper curled into the smallest ball she could manage behind Mrs.

Chen's desk.

- First days are hard, Mrs.

Chen said softly.

- For everyone.

An hour crept by.

Then another.

Pepper counted the clock's ticks, matching them to her heartbeat.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Tap-tap-tap.

Shuffle.

Tap-tap-tap.

Shuffle.

A boy appeared in the doorway, breathing hard.

He used two metal crutches, swinging his legs forward in a careful rhythm.

His backpack hung crooked.

When he saw Pepper, he froze.

- There is a dog here?

he whispered.

Pepper's ears flattened.

She had seen that look before, from kids who wanted to grab and squeeze and squeal.

She shrank further behind the desk.

But this boy did not rush forward.

Instead, he carefully lowered himself to the floor, setting his crutches aside with a soft clatter.

He held out one hand, palm up, and waited.

- That is Pepper, Mrs.

Chen said.

- She's new here too.

And this is Marcus. He started at Riverside this week.

- I needed a quiet minute, Marcus admitted, his cheeks flushing.

- Recess is a lot.

Pepper's nose twitched.

He smelled like vanilla soap and nervousness-the same jittery feeling that made her own paws shake.

- My old school was small, Marcus said quietly, still holding his hand steady.

- Twelve kids in my class.

Here, there are twenty-eight kids with inside jokes I do not understand.

His voice trailed off.

Pepper understood not knowing how.

She understood watching everyone else belong while you stayed outside.

She took one step forward.

Then another.

Marcus stayed perfectly still.

- I get it, he whispered.

- Being the new one.

Feeling like everyone's staring.

Pepper's tail lifted slightly.

She moved closer, close enough to sniff his outstretched fingers.

They trembled, like her paws on this too-smooth office floor.

- Maybe we could figure out the new normal together?

Marcus said.

Something warm flickered in Pepper's chest.

She had spent all morning worrying that Jamie did not need her anymore.

But here was someone who needed a friend as much as she did.

The lunch bell rang, sharp and startling.

Marcus's face grew quiet.

- That is the hardest part.

The cafeteria.

By the time I get there, all the tables are full.

Pepper made a decision.

Her heart hammered as she pressed her head against Marcus's knee, something she had never done with a stranger before.

A soft whimper slipped from her throat.

- Really?

Marcus's eyes went wide.

- You would sit with me?

Mrs.

Chen smiled.

- I think Pepper volunteered to be your lunch buddy.

Marcus reached for his crutches faster than Pepper had seen him move yet.

- More than all right!

They made their way toward the cafeteria together.

Marcus's tap-tap-shuffle matched Pepper's click-click-pad perfectly.

The hallway smelled like chicken nuggets and applesauce.

Voices echoed off the walls, so many voices all at once.

When they reached the cafeteria entrance, Pepper's instinct screamed to turn around.

To hide.

To wait for Jamie in the quiet office.

But she felt Marcus's hand rest gently on her head.

He was worried too.

She could feel it in how his fingers shook slightly.

She wagged her tail.

Just once.

- There is a dog!

someone shouted.

- Can we pet her?

A whole group of kids rushed over, including the girl with bouncy curls from Jamie's classroom.

- I am Zara, she said, kneeling carefully.

- Is she friendly?

- This is Pepper, Marcus announced, his voice steadier than before.

- She is new here, like me.

We are kind of a team.

A boy in red sneakers grinned.

- I am Oliver.

Marcus, you should sit with us!

We have an extra spot.

- And I can show you the good swings at afternoon recess, Zara added.

Marcus looked down at Pepper.

She looked up at Marcus.

Together, they took a breath and followed the group to a table by the windows.

It was not the same as home.

It was not Pepper's porch or Jamie's grape jelly toast mornings.

But Marcus's hand stayed gentle on her head, and the other kids asked questions without grabbing, and different did not automatically mean bad.

Halfway through lunch, Jamie appeared with his tray.

- Mom said I could eat with you guys today!

His whole face lit up when he saw Pepper.

- Pep!

You made friends!

- Actually, Marcus said quietly, - she helped *me* make friends.

I was going to hide, but Pepper was brave first.

Even though she was worried too.

Jamie's eyes went wide.

- Really?

- She showed me you can be nervous and brave at the same time, Marcus explained.

Pepper's tail thumped against the cafeteria floor.

She licked Jamie's hand, then Marcus's, then Zara's, making the whole table giggle.

That afternoon, when the final bell rang, Pepper walked with Marcus to meet his mom at pickup.

Jamie bounded over, his new backpack bouncing.

- Same time tomorrow?

Marcus asked, scratching behind Pepper's ears exactly the way she liked.

Pepper's tail wagged so hard her whole body wiggled.

On the ride home, Jamie whispered:

- I was worried you would dislike coming to school.

But you did more than adjust, Pep.

You helped someone else adjust too.

Pepper rested her head on Jamie's lap, watching familiar streets roll past the window.

Tomorrow, the alarm would buzz.

Tomorrow, she would go back to that school that smelled like lemon cleaner and new beginnings.

Tomorrow, Marcus would be waiting, maybe still a little nervous, definitely needing a friend who understood.

And tomorrow, Pepper decided, her tail thumping steadily, she would wag first.
