## Story

Maya arranged her stuffed animals in a perfect line along her pillow.

Across the room, Leo lay on his stomach, staring at the carpet.

"Want to build a fort?" Maya asked.

Leo shook his head without looking up.

Maya tilted her head.

Usually, Leo bounced around their shared bedroom like a rubber ball.

He made up songs about his toy dinosaurs.

He asked her a million questions.

But for three days now, he had been different.

Quieter.

Still.

Maya walked over and sat down next to him.

She could see his fingers picking at a loose thread on the rug.

"Leo, what is wrong?"

"Nothing," he mumbled.

But Maya had shared a room with her little brother for his whole life.

She knew when something was bothering him.

She could tell by the way his voice got flat.

By the way he would not meet her eyes.

She decided to wait.

Sometimes people needed time before they were ready to talk.

That night, after their parents turned off the hallway light, Maya switched on the small lamp between their beds.

Yellow light made their room feel cozy and safe.

"Maya?" Leo's voice was small in the quiet.

"I am right here."

Leo sat up in bed.

"Can I tell you something?"

"Always," Maya said.

He pulled his knees to his chest.

"At recess, nobody lets me play. I asked to join soccer yesterday. They said their teams were full. Today I asked about basketball. They said I was too short."

Maya's stomach twisted.

"What did you do?"

"I sat on the bench. I watched everyone else run around and have fun." Leo's voice wobbled.

"I do not know how to make them include me."

Maya climbed out of bed and sat beside him.

She put her hand on his shoulder.

"That must feel terrible," she said.

"It does." Leo looked at her.

"Can you help me figure out what to do?"

Maya squeezed his shoulder.

"Yes. We will work on this together. I promise."

For the first time in days, Leo smiled a little.

The next afternoon, Maya sat cross-legged on her bed, thinking hard.

She wanted to help Leo, but she was not sure what to do.

Then she remembered something from last winter.

She had been nervous about singing in the school concert.

Her stomach had hurt every time she thought about it.

Mom had listened to her worry for twenty whole minutes without saying, "You will be fine." Just having someone take her feelings seriously had helped.

Maybe that was what Leo needed too.

Not someone to fix everything instantly.

Just someone who cared enough to listen.

When Leo had told her about the playground last night, she had noticed his shoulders relax as he talked.

His voice had gotten steadier.

Sharing the problem had made him feel less alone.

Maya realized something important.

Being responsible for her brother did not mean having all the answers right away.

It meant paying attention when he needed her.

It meant taking his problems seriously instead of brushing them off.

She had already helped just by listening.

But now she needed to do more.

"Leo, I have an idea," Maya said after dinner.

She pushed their toy box to the side, clearing space on the bedroom floor.

Leo looked up from his homework.

"What kind of idea?"

"We are going to practice," Maya said.

"Pretend I am a kid at recess. You are going to ask if you can play."

Leo's eyes got wide.

"But what if they say no again?"

"Then we will practice what to say next," Maya said.

"Come on. Stand up."

Leo stood, but he stared at his shoes.

"Can I play?" he whispered.

"I cannot hear you," Maya said gently.

"Try again. Look at me this time."

Leo lifted his chin.

"Can I play with you?"

"Better! Now, pretend I say the teams are full. What could you do?"

Leo thought for a moment.

"Ask if I can play the next game?"

"Great idea!" Maya said.

"Or you could offer to keep score. That way you are still part of things."

They practiced again and again.

Maya pretended to be different kids.

Sometimes she was nice.

Sometimes she ignored him.

Leo practiced staying friendly even when it was hard.

After a while, they both flopped onto Maya's bed, breathing hard.

"This is tiring," Leo said.

"I know," Maya agreed.

"But you are getting really good at it."

After Leo went to brush his teeth, Maya stayed on her bed.

Her throat felt dry from talking so much.

Her legs were tired from jumping around pretending to play sports.

She could have been reading her new book instead.

Or finishing her drawing.

But she had chosen to help Leo.

She had spent real time on it.

Real effort.

Maya felt something warm bloom in her chest.

She felt proud.

Not the showing-off kind of proud.

The quiet kind that comes from doing something that matters.

Being responsible meant actually doing the work.

Not just saying, "I will help you," and then forgetting about it.

It meant following through even when it was hard.

Even when it took time she could spend doing other things.

That was what real helping looked like.

The next day dragged on forever.

Maya kept wondering about Leo.

Was he okay?

Did he remember what they practiced?

When she finally got home, she raced to their bedroom.

Empty.

She sat on her bed, tapping her feet.

Then she heard footsteps pounding up the stairs.

The door swung open and Leo rushed in, his backpack bouncing.

"Maya! Guess what!"

Maya jumped up.

"What happened?"

"I did it!" Leo's whole face was bright.

"I asked the soccer kids if I could play. I looked right at them and smiled, just like we practiced."

"And?" Maya could barely stand still.

"They said the teams were full. But I asked if I could play next game, and they said okay!" Leo was talking so fast the words tumbled over each other.

"And when the next game started, I was on a team! I kicked the ball three times!"

"Three times!" Maya grabbed his hands and they spun in a circle.

Leo held up his hand.

They did their special handshake.

Three high-fives, two fist bumps, and jazz hands at the end.

They both laughed until their stomachs hurt.

"I was really nervous," Leo admitted.

"But remembering what we practiced helped me be brave."

"You were so brave," Maya said.

"I am really proud of you."

That night, they got ready for bed.

Leo climbed under his covers, but he did not close his eyes.

"Maya?" he said.

"Tomorrow I am going to ask that new kid in my class to play with us. He sits alone at recess too."

Maya pulled her blanket up.

"That is a really good idea."

"You helped me," Leo said.

"So I should help other people who get left out."

Maya smiled in the dim light.

She thought about the past few days.

About noticing when Leo was upset.

About listening when he was ready to talk.

About practicing with him even though it took time and energy.

Being a responsible family member meant all of those things.

It meant paying attention when someone needed help.

It meant caring enough to actually do something about it.

It meant keeping your promises even when it was easier not to.

And she had learned something else too.

When you help someone, they learn to help others.

Responsibility spreads like ripples in a pond, reaching farther than you expect.

"Maya?" Leo whispered.

"Yeah?"

"Thank you for helping me."

The warm feeling in Maya's chest grew bigger.

"Any time, Leo. That is what family does."

Outside, the moon rose over the rooftops.

Inside their shared bedroom, both children felt peaceful.

Tomorrow, Leo would help someone else.

And Maya knew that was the best part of all.
