# Sammy the Scarecrow

_An Adventure of Redemption and Friendship_

## Story

## Sammy's Mischief

Once upon a time, on a farm surrounded by fields of green crops and tall trees, there lived an unusual scarecrow named Sammy. During the day, he stood tall in his straw hat and tattered clothes, guarding the crops from hungry crows. But at night, when all the animals were asleep, something magical happened: Sammy came to life.

When evening came, Sammy became mischievous and playful. One night, he found Henrietta the hen's eggs and hid them under his hat. The next morning, Henrietta searched everywhere until Sammy revealed the trick.

At first, the animals laughed at Sammy's tricks, but they soon grew tired of them. The sheep could not rest when he made silly faces outside their window at night. The cows grew frustrated when he tipped over their water buckets.

Sammy did not realize his fun was upsetting everyone until one night, when the animals decided they had had enough.

## The Animals' Plan

The next day, the animals gathered together to come up with a plan. They all agreed that Sammy's mischief was getting out of hand and something needed to be done. The chickens suggested making a loud cluck chorus, and the cows offered to stand in a calm circle so everyone could talk.

Finally, the wise old owl spoke up and suggested that they work together as a team to get Sammy's attention. Everyone listened carefully as he outlined his plan.

"First," said Owl, "we need someone to invite Sammy over while we set up our meeting circle."

The ducks quickly volunteered for this task since they could waddle and quack in a way that always made Sammy curious.

"Once he comes over," continued Owl, "the pigs will set out lanterns so everyone can see each other."

The pigs oinked in agreement; they liked having a helpful job.

"And then what?" asked Sheep curiously.

"Then we will all tell Sammy how his tricks make us feel," said Owl. "That way he can understand what needs to change."

All of the animals nodded. It was a solid plan: simple and kind.

As evening settled over the farm, everyone got into position. The ducks began quacking cheerfully near one end of the field while Sammy followed them excitedly.

When Sammy reached the lantern circle, Piggy waved him in with a friendly oink. Sammy saw every animal waiting and realized this was not another prank.

Just like Owl had planned it.

## Putting the Plan into Action

Excitement was in the air as all the animals gathered together to put their plan into action. It was time to help Sammy understand why his mischievous behavior needed to change.

The cows started things off with their gentle mooing, which made Sammy turn around to see what was going on. The sheep formed a soft half-circle, and Owl asked everyone to speak one at a time.

As soon as Sammy realized that no one wanted to play along with his pranks, his straw shoulders drooped.

Then came the moment of truth: all of the animals sat down with Sammy and explained how they felt about his behavior. They told him how they were tired of being pranked every night and how they wished he would stop causing trouble for everyone on the farm.

Sammy listened carefully without interrupting anyone or defending himself. He understood why everyone was upset and apologized sincerely for his actions.

From that day on, everything changed. Instead of playing pranks at night, Sammy used his watchful eyes to help the farm. He kept lookout while the animals slept and rustled his straw whenever trouble came near.

The farm felt peaceful again, and Sammy still found playful ways to make his friends laugh during the day.

## Sammy is Forgiven and Becomes a Protector

The animals' plan had worked, and Sammy understood why his nighttime mischief had hurt his friends. The next day, he apologized to all of them.

"I am sorry for being so mischievous," said Sammy. "I did not realize how much trouble I was causing all of you."

The animals forgave him because they knew he meant it. They were happy Sammy wanted to make amends.

From then on, Sammy became the farm's night watcher. When raccoons tried to raid the chicken coop, Sammy clattered a tin pail against his post until Farmer John hurried outside and the raccoons scampered away.

The animals were grateful for their new protector who had gone from being pesky to helpful overnight! They showed him kindness by inviting him into their barns at night when it rained or snowed outside.

Sammy felt loved by his animal friends, which made him happier than any prank ever could have done.

## Sammy's New Ways

The animals on the farm still enjoyed Sammy's company during the day. He stood tall, waved crows away, and let the chickens balance dandelions on his hat.

At night, he remembered how his old tricks had made the animals worry. He did not want to be that kind of scarecrow anymore.

So when he felt the old urge to tip a bucket or hide an egg, Sammy found a better job instead.

He counted the hens as they settled into the coop. He watched the gate when the wind rattled it. He warned the sheep when a loose branch creaked over their pen.

The animals noticed. Little by little, they trusted him more.

"You are still funny," said the duck one morning, "but now your jokes do not make extra chores."

"That is the best kind of funny," Sammy said, and his straw hat bobbed proudly in the breeze.

From then on, Sammy worked hard beside his animal companions, keeping crows away by day and watching over the farm by night.
