## Story

The kelp forest swayed in the current like emerald ribbons.

Marina floated at the edge, watching her friends dart between the tall green stalks.

"Come play hide-and-seek with us!" called Coral, her pink tail flashing.

Marina's fins trembled.

Inside those twisting tunnels, everything looked the same.

What if the paths went on forever?

"I have to help my mother with the tide gardens," Marina said, swimming backward.

Her friends vanished into the maze.

Marina's cheeks burned with shame.

She had just told a lie, and now she was all alone.

Marina swam until she found a quiet coral reef.

She tucked herself behind a purple fan coral and peeked back toward the maze.

Through the blue water, she could see flashes of color as her friends played together.

Why could everyone else swim through the kelp forest without worry?

What was wrong with her?

Marina pressed her hands against the rough coral.

Her chest felt heavy and tight.

A tear slipped down her cheek, then another.

She had never felt so alone.

A gentle voice spoke beside her.

"Why are you crying, little one?"

Marina looked up.

An enormous sea turtle floated there, her shell covered in tiny barnacles and soft green moss.

The turtle's eyes were kind and patient, like the ocean itself.

"I am Shelly," the turtle said.

"I have lived in these waters for many, many years."

Something about Shelly's calm voice made Marina want to tell the truth this time.

"I want to play with my friends, but they are in the kelp forest. I worry about getting turned around in there. What if I cannot find my way out?"

Shelly nodded slowly, as if she understood completely.

"The maze troubles you."

Marina nodded, relieved that someone finally knew how she felt.

Shelly settled onto a nearby rock, her flippers folding gently at her sides.

"When I was young, I worried about the open ocean. All that endless blue water! I stayed close to the reef, just like you are doing now."

Marina's eyes widened.

"Really? You were worried too?"

"Oh yes. But I learned something important. Being brave does not mean you never feel worried. It means you do things even when you are worried."

Marina had never thought about bravery that way before.

Shelly gestured toward the kelp forest with one flipper.

"Let me teach you three things. First, always look up. See how the sunlight shines through? That light will guide you. Second, notice special things as you swim. A twisted stalk here, a shell there. These will help you remember your path."

"And third?"

Shelly looked her in the eyes.

"Trust that you are stronger than you think."

Marina repeated the lessons in her mind.

Follow the light.

Remember landmarks.

Trust herself.

"Will you come with me?"

"I will swim beside you," Shelly promised.

Marina's heart pounded as they approached the forest entrance.

The tall stalks towered above her like a green cathedral.

She paused, feeling the worry rise in her chest again.

Then she looked up.

Sunlight filtered through the canopy in golden beams, just like Shelly said it would.

Marina swam forward.

The kelp fronds brushed against her arms, soft and cool.

At first, every turn looked exactly the same.

But then Marina noticed a rock shaped like a star.

She swam past it and spotted a piece of driftwood covered in orange sponges.

Each landmark became like a friend, helping her remember where she had been.

Shelly glided beside her, silent but steady.

Marina chose her path carefully, always keeping the sunlight in view above her.

Left around the twisted stalk.

Right past the shell cluster.

Straight through the narrow gap.

Her worry was still there, but she kept swimming anyway.

The kelp opened into a clearing, and Marina gasped.

Her friends were there, playing tag in a beautiful open space.

Rays of sunlight danced on the sandy bottom.

Tiny silver fish darted between the mermaids like living stars.

"Marina!" Coral spotted her first.

"You came!"

Marina swam into the clearing, her whole body tingling.

She had done it.

She had navigated the maze by herself, using Shelly's lessons and her own strength.

"I followed the light and remembered landmarks," Marina explained proudly.

The worry that had felt so enormous before seemed smaller now.

She had faced it and discovered something wonderful about herself.

Shelly winked at her from the edge of the clearing, then slowly swam away to help other young ones who needed her wisdom.

As her friends returned to their game, Marina noticed a tiny seahorse peeking from behind a kelp stalk.

The little creature's eyes were wide with worry.

Marina recognized that look immediately.

She had felt exactly the same way just moments ago.

She swam over slowly, keeping her movements gentle and calm.

"Hello. My name is Marina. Would you like to play with us?"

The seahorse shook his head.

"I cannot. I do not know how to get through the maze. What if I get turned around?"

Marina smiled, remembering Shelly's kindness and patience.

"I can help you. I just learned three very good tricks. First, you follow the light above. Then you remember special landmarks. And third, you trust that you are stronger than you think."

The seahorse listened carefully, just as Marina had listened to Shelly.

As they swam together into the kelp forest, Marina felt something warm bloom in her chest.

The courage Shelly had shared with her was growing, becoming something she could give to someone else.

And helping the little seahorse be brave made Marina feel even braver herself.
