## Story

Marina pressed her face against the window of her coral cottage, watching her classmates swirl through the practice currents outside.

The red roof tiles above her glowed warm in the filtered sunlight, and sea anemones bobbed cheerfully in the flower boxes.

But Marina's stomach felt heavy as a ship's anchor.

Tomorrow, everyone would travel to the ancient shipwreck garden.

Everyone knew how to read the ocean currents-everyone except Marina.

She had sat through three lessons now, her hand twitching at her side but never rising.

The question sat on her tongue like a quiet pearl: *Which way does the western current flow?* But what if the others whispered behind their fins?

What if Teacher Coral's smile faded with disappointment?

So Marina stayed silent, even as confusion twisted tighter inside her.

Morning arrived with golden light dancing through the water.

Marina's class gathered where the kelp forest began, tiny bioluminescent creatures drifting past like fallen stars.

Teacher Coral's voice rang clear.

- Follow the western current, young ones!

Feel how it flows warm and steady.

Marina's heart dropped to her tail.

All the currents looked identical-invisible ribbons weaving and crossing.

Her best friend Coral darted forward.

Marina followed, but the water pulled her sideways.

Down.

Spinning.

The other mermaids vanished.

Kelp stalks rose around Marina like prison bars, their shade pressing close.

The water here felt still and cold.

Every direction showed the same endless maze of brown and green.

Marina's fins trembled.

Her breath came quick and shallow.

*If only I had asked.

If only I had been brave enough.*

Something large moved through the water.

Marina's heart hammered as an enormous sea turtle glided into a small clearing where light filtered down from above.

The turtle's shell was ancient, covered in barnacles that sparkled like jewels and patterns that whispered of a hundred voyages.

But her eyes held only gentleness.

- Hello, little one.

I am Shelly.

The kindness in that voice unlocked something in Marina.

Words tumbled out.

- I am turned around!

I did not understand how to read the currents, but I was too nervous to ask.

Now I do not know how to get home!

Shelly settled onto a smooth rock.

- Ah.

Too nervous to ask questions.

Marina nodded miserably.

- I thought asking meant I was not smart enough.

Shelly's eyes crinkled with warmth.

- When I was young-many tides ago-I swam in circles for an entire week because I was too embarrassed to ask where the coral palace was.

Marina blinked.

- But you are so wise!

- That is exactly my point, dear one.

Shelly began swimming slowly, and Marina followed.

- Every wise creature I have known became wise by asking countless questions.

My grandmother asked questions.

The ancient whale who taught me navigation asked questions.

Even the smallest fish who knows where the sweetest kelp grows-he asked questions to learn it.

They moved through the kelp together, heading toward clearer water.

Marina listened as Shelly continued.

- Questions are not signs of weakness.

They are how we discover.

How we grow.

Being brave enough to ask is the truest kind of strength.

The words settled into Marina's heart like warm sunlight.

She had never imagined it that way before.

The water ahead brightened.

Two ocean currents met in swirling patterns-one flowing left in low sapphire ribbons, the other flowing right in pale aqua waves.

Shelly stopped.

She floated peacefully, saying nothing.

Marina stared at the currents.

She did not know which one led home.

The old worry whispered that she should stay quiet, that she should not bother Shelly with her question.

But then she remembered: *Questions are strength.*

Marina's heart pounded against her ribs.

She took a breath of salt water.

- Shelly?

Her voice came out small.

- Which current leads to my cottage?

The question hung in the water between them.

Marina had done it.

She had actually asked.

Shelly's whole face lit up.

- The left current, brave one.

Well done.

Warmth bloomed through Marina's chest, golden and bright.

Asking had not hurt at all.

It felt wonderful-like setting down a stone she had been carrying.

As they swam toward home, questions bubbled up inside Marina like spring water.

- How old are you, Shelly?

- A hundred and forty-three years.

- What is the farthest you have ever traveled?

- To the edge of the great blue, where the water turns dim as midnight.

- Do you have a favorite place in the whole ocean?

- Right here, helping young mermaids find their courage.

Each question came easier than the last.

By the time Marina's red-roofed cottage appeared ahead, she felt lighter, braver, and free.

The next morning, Marina noticed a young seahorse sitting by himself in class.

His brow furrowed with confusion as Teacher Coral explained finding food in the shipwreck's nooks.

The seahorse's fin stayed down, though Marina could see the question written across his worried face.

She recognized that expression.

She had worn it herself yesterday.

Marina swam over.

- Hi.

I am Marina.

I think you might have a question.

The seahorse's eyes widened.

- I do, but everyone will think I am silly.

Marina's voice came out soft but certain.

- Questions are not silly.

They are how we learn.

And asking them, even when you are nervous?

That is real courage.

The seahorse studied her face.

Then, slowly, he smiled.

His tiny fin rose into the water.

- Teacher Coral?

I have a question about the shipwreck.

Marina's chest filled with that same golden warmth.

Teacher Coral met her gaze and nodded with pride.

That evening, Marina spotted Shelly gliding past her window.

The ancient turtle winked, and Marina waved back.

She had learned something more precious than reading currents.

She had learned that courage was not the absence of worry-it was speaking up anyway, one question at a time.
