## Story

Splash's clicks bounced off the coral towers-left, right, spin!

The young dolphin twisted through the water, chasing a shimmer of light near the reef.

- Splash, wait for me!

his sister Ripple called.

But Splash had already spotted it-a pearl the size of a coconut, glowing soft pink as it drifted toward a crack in the reef wall.

Without thinking, he shot after it.

The pearl slipped through the opening.

Splash followed.

Inside, his world changed.

Thousands of pearls studded the walls like stars, casting pink, blue, and silver light through winding tunnels.

The enormous pearl bobbed ahead.

Splash barely noticed the turns he took, too enchanted by the dancing colors.

When he finally stopped, the pearl had settled in a small chamber.

He nudged it with his nose, watching rainbows scatter.

Then he turned to leave.

His stomach dropped.

Four identical tunnels stretched before him, each glittering with the same pearl-light.

Which one had he come through?

Splash sent out clicks, but the sounds bounced strangely, jumbled and confusing.

- Mom?

he called.

Only echoes answered.

His fins trembled.

He had been so focused on the pearl, he had not paid attention.

Now every direction looked the same.

Splash picked a tunnel and swam.

It curved left, then right, then split into three more passages.

He tried another path.

It ended at solid rock.

His chest tightened.

What if he never found his way out?

He forced himself to breathe slowly.

Panicking would not help.

Maybe if he tried each tunnel?

But there were so many.

A soft voice made him jump.

- Hello?

Splash spun around.

A young mermaid peered from behind a boulder, her brown hair floating around her face, her tail shimmering green-gold.

She clutched a piece of kelp covered in scribbled marks.

- I am Marina.

Are you turned around too?

- Very much.

I am Splash.

I chased a pearl and forgot to watch where I was going.

Marina swam closer.

- I was collecting pearls for my sister's celebration.

I thought I knew these grottos, but now I do not know which tunnel leads home.

She gestured helplessly at the maze of tunnels and showed him the kelp.

Lines crisscrossed everywhere, some crossed out, others marked with question marks.

- That tunnel ends at a rock wall, Splash said, pointing with his fin.

Marina quickly marked it.

- Thank you!

That is one less to worry about.

They stared at the remaining tunnels.

Three passages stretched ahead, all gleaming with pearl-light.

- I wish I had paid better attention, Splash said softly.

- Me too.

I kept telling myself 'one more pearl.'

Splash sent out clicks, listening carefully this time instead of rushing.

The echoes came back slightly different from each tunnel.

- That one sounds hollow, like it goes farther.

But that one sounds shorter, like it might open up.

Marina's eyes widened.

- You can tell that from sound?

- Dolphins are good at echolocation.

I usually do not slow down enough to listen.

- And mermaids are good at reading currents.

Marina let her hair drift, watching which direction it flowed.

- The water moves toward the ocean.

If we follow the current and you use your clicks,

- We might find the way out!

Splash finished.

Hope bloomed in his chest.

Not because he could do it by himself-because together, they had a chance.

They started down the middle tunnel, moving slowly.

Splash clicked constantly, building a sound-picture.

Marina watched the currents and studied the pearls.

- The blue pearls line the longer tunnels.

And the pink ones cluster near closed passages.

Look-pink ahead.

Splash clicked and listened.

- You are right.

It narrows about twenty tail-lengths forward.

Let us try the left branch.

They backtracked and chose differently.

This tunnel felt more promising-the current grew stronger, and Splash's clicks revealed it continuing far ahead.

The tunnel opened into a vast chamber.

In the center, nested among smaller pearls, sat the giant pearl Splash had chased.

It glowed brighter here, magnificent.

- The current splits around it, Splash observed.

- If we move it, the water might flow straight through and show us which way leads out.

- But it is enormous.

I cannot move it by myself.

- And I cannot either.

But maybe together?

They positioned themselves on opposite sides.

Marina gripped with her hands while Splash pushed with his nose.

The pearl barely budged at first.

Splash's muscles strained.

Marina's face scrunched with effort.

- Keep going!

- Almost there!

Slowly, the pearl rolled aside.

The current rushed through freely, revealing a hidden passage.

This tunnel glowed with different light-brighter, more golden.

- That is sunlight!

Marina pointed.

- I can hear the open ocean!

They swam faster, following the strengthening current.

The tunnel sloped upward.

Splash could taste the familiar salt of open water now.

Then the tunnel narrowed sharply.

A rockfall blocked most of the opening, leaving only a small gap.

Splash tried to squeeze through, but his body would not fit.

He pushed at the larger stones.

They would not budge.

His excitement crumbled.

- Maybe you should go get help.

You are smaller.

You could fit through.

Marina studied the rockfall.

- How long would that take?

And what if I get turned around trying to find my way back?

- But I cannot move these rocks by myself.

- And I cannot either.

But we have help, do we not?

Marina examined the rocks more carefully, running her hands along them.

- These smaller ones are loose.

If we remove them first, the bigger ones might shift.

I can reach the small ones, but I am not strong enough to pull them free.

Splash swam closer.

- I can push while you guide them out.

- Exactly.

Marina pointed to a gray stone wedged near the top.

- That one first.

Splash positioned himself and pushed.

The stone popped free.

Marina caught it and set it aside.

The rock beside it shifted.

- Good!

Now the white one.

Careful, it is supporting two others.

Working together, they removed stones one by one.

Marina's careful observation told them which rocks to move safely.

Splash's strength dislodged even the stubborn ones.

Gradually, the opening widened.

- Try now.

Splash squeezed through.

It was tight, but he made it!

Marina followed easily, and they burst into open water together.

Sunlight poured down from above, turning everything golden.

Splash leaped into the air, his whole body singing with joy.

When he splashed back down, Marina was laughing.

- We did it!

We actually did it!

In the distance, Splash spotted his pod approaching.

From the opposite direction, mermaids swam toward them.

- Splash!

his mother called.

- I am sorry, Mom.

I chased a pearl without thinking, and I got turned around.

But I met Marina, and we helped each other find the way out.

Marina's mother embraced her daughter.

- We were so worried.

- I am sorry.

I went too low collecting pearls.

But Splash used his echolocation to map the tunnels, and I read the currents, and together we solved it.

Splash's mother smiled.

- It seems our children make a good team.

- Perhaps this is how our peoples should explore these waters, Marina's mother agreed.

- Together, learning from each other's strengths.

Splash looked at Marina, and she grinned back.

They had both made mistakes-rushing ahead without thinking, getting turned around, feeling nervous.

But they had also learned something important: some problems are too big to solve by themselves.

Together, though, they could do amazing things.

- Want to explore the coral gardens tomorrow?

Marina asked.

- Carefully this time, with our families?

- Yes!

And I promise to pay attention to where we are going.

As the sun painted the ocean in shades of orange and purple, the two families swam home together.

Splash had chased a pearl into the winding grottos and found something far more valuable: a friend, and the knowledge that teamwork could light the way through even the trickiest maze.
