## Story

Melody's voice could turn the ocean currents silver.

When she sang, starfish peeked from their hiding spots and angelfish forgot which way was up.

But this morning, something felt wrong-like an absent note in her favorite song.

She had forgotten something important.

She could not remember what.

The worry followed her like a shade as she swam above the Sapphire Trench.

Below, the water shifted from turquoise to cobalt to a low violet that seemed to hum with secrets.

Melody had spent the past three weeks performing-singing for the coral palace gatherings, entertaining schools of fish, accepting praise like it was kelp candy.

Then she noticed it.

A pattern of light pulsing from far below-emerald flash, pause, sapphire flash, pause, emerald again.

The rhythm made her massive heart skip.

Luna's signal.

The one Melody had promised to answer.

Her stomach dropped like a stone.

Three full moons ago, a young mermaid named Luna had appeared in these waters, her silver-blue tail trembling with worry.

Luna's family had moved to the trench's hidden gardens, and the little mermaid could not sleep in the pressing dimness.

Melody remembered Luna's words perfectly now.

-The low feels like it wants to swallow me whole, Luna had whispered.

-I will show you there is nothing to worry about, Melody had declared, her voice booming with confidence.

-Meet me at the next full moon.

I will guide you through the lowest places.

My songs will light every shade.

But the full moon had passed while Melody sang at a shipwreck celebration.

And another.

And another.

And now Luna was down there by herself, sending their emergency signal into the vast dimness.

Melody stared into the trench.

She had never actually descended that far.

She had only said she would, certain her powerful voice would protect her if she ever needed to go.

The dimness below looked endless.

Hungry.

The signal pulsed again-weaker now, like a candle glow in wind.

Melody's fins trembled.

She could swim away.

Pretend she had not seen it.

Return to the kelp forest where everyone loved her performances and no one asked her to be brave.

But the thought made her throat tighten with shame.

She had made a promise.

She had already broken it by forgetting.

Breaking it again would be worse than facing any dimness.

Melody filled her lungs until they ached and dove.

The temperature dropped with each powerful stroke of her tail.

The familiar blue-green world faded to purple, then to indigo, then to black so complete it pressed against her skin.

Her heart thundered.

Her breath came quick and shallow.

But she began to sing-a low, steady note that rolled from her chest like distant thunder.

The sound waves traveled outward, bouncing back to reveal shapes: craggy rocks draped in feathery coral, forests of tube worms swaying like ghostly fingers, schools of silver fish that scattered at her approach.

Her song painted pictures where her eyes could not see.

She was not only singing to calm herself anymore.

She was singing so Luna could find her.

-Luna!

Melody called, her voice cracking.

-I am here!

I came!

A small voice echoed from somewhere below.

-Melody?

You came?

Following the sound, Melody discovered a grotto entrance curtained with luminous anemones.

Their soft glow revealed Luna pressed against the back wall, her tail wrapped tight around herself.

But clustered around her were three tiny octopuses and a cluster of jellyfish pulsing anxiously.

-I was trying to be brave, Luna said, her voice shaking.

-I explored like you said I should.

But the current changed and swept these little ones into the grotto.

They are turned around.

Their families are farther in the trench, and I was too nervous to take them there by myself.

Luna's eyes glistened with unshed tears.

-So I sent the signal, hoping you would remember our promise.

But I thought maybe you would forgotten about me.

The words reached Melody like a cold current.

Her throat tightened until she could not make any sound at all.

-I did forget, Melody finally said, forcing the truth out even though it scraped her throat raw.

-I got caught up in performing for crowds who cheered for me.

I let you down, Luna.

I am so, so sorry.

Luna blinked, surprised.

She had never heard the great whale sound uncertain before.

-But you came now, Luna said softly.

-Even though you were nervous.

I could hear it in your voice when you were diving.

Melody's massive heart squeezed.

-You could hear that?

-Your song was shaking, Luna admitted.

-Just a little.

Like mine does when I am worried.

Melody let out a long breath that sent bubbles spiraling upward.

-I was terrified the whole way down.

I am still nervous now.

But you needed help, and I had already broken one promise.

I could not break another.

Luna swam closer, touching Melody's fin with her small hand.

-So being brave does not mean you are not worried?

-Being brave means doing what matters even when your whole body wants to swim away, Melody said.

-And right now, what matters is getting these little ones home.

Will you help me?

Luna's tail unfurled slightly.

-I know where the octopus gardens are.

And the jellyfish bloom lives near the thermal vents.

I have watched them from far away but never got close enough.

-Then let us go together, Melody said.

-I will sing to show us the way.

You guide us with what you know.

Deal?

Luna nodded, her worry shifting into something that looked almost like excitement.

-Deal.

They descended further into the trench, Melody's song revealing wonders with each note: a shipwreck garden where ancient portholes bloomed with sea roses, forests of black coral that glowed purple when touched, crystallized mineral formations that chimed like bells in the current.

Luna's eyes grew wider with each discovery.

- It is not only dim water down here.

It is magical!

-Worry can blind us to beauty, Melody said.

-I almost let it keep me from seeing this.

From keeping my promise to you.

They found the octopus gardens first-a grove of swaying kelp where the tiny octopuses' family waited, their arms waving frantically.

The little ones squeaked with joy and zoomed to their parents, wrapping their arms around them in tight hugs.

Next, they located the jellyfish bloom near the thermal vents, where warm water rose in shimmering columns of gold and silver.

The jellyfish pulsed happily as they rejoined their group, their bioluminescence creating a dance of light that painted the water with rainbows.

Luna laughed-a sound like bubbles rising toward sunlight.

-I have been so nervous of the low, but it has been full of wonders this whole time.

I needed someone to help me see it.

- And I needed someone to help me remember what matters, Melody said.

-Not applause.

Not crowds.

Keeping promises.

Being honest.

Being brave even when you are nervous.

They began ascending together, Luna pointing out grottos she now recognized, Melody singing a new melody-one about honesty, second chances, and promises kept even when they are hard.

When they reached the upper waters where sunlight painted golden paths through the blue, Luna turned to Melody.

-Will you come back?

Not to perform.

Just to explore with me?

-Every full moon, Melody promised.

- I will mark it on my heart this time, not only my mind.

And if I ever start to forget what is important again, I hope you will remind me.

-And if you do forget?

Luna asked.

Melody considered this carefully.

-Then I hope you will send the signal, and I hope I will be brave enough to admit my mistake and come anyway.

That is what real friends do.

Luna smiled-a smile as bright as the bioluminescent gardens below.

-That is what brave friends do.

From that day forward, Melody still sang for audiences in the kelp forests and coral palaces.

Her voice was as beautiful, her performances as magical.

But she also kept a different kind of appointment-one no crowd would ever applaud.

Every full moon, she and Luna dove into the Sapphire Trench, discovering new wonders and guiding wandering creatures home.

And Melody learned that the most important songs were not the ones that earned the loudest cheers, but the quiet promises kept in the lowest places, where only honest hearts and brave friends dared to swim.
