## Story

The soccer ball sailed past the goal and hit the fence simply as the first raindrops settled.

Jake scooped it up, mud already smearing across the white hexagons.

His phone buzzed - another text from Marcus.

*Cannot make it.

Sorry dude.*

That made everyone.

No team practice today.

Jake slumped onto the porch steps, watching rain dimple the puddles forming in his backyard.

He had been working on his passes all week.

Now Saturday stretched ahead, empty and gray.

Then he heard it - a sound that did not belong to the rain.

Soft and broken, like someone trying not to cry but failing.

It drifted from the forest edge where cedars grew thick and wild.

Jake stood, listening harder.

There it was again, barely louder than the raindrops hitting leaves.

His chest still felt heavy with disappointment, but that crying sounded like someone having an even worse day than his.

Maybe being helpful mattered more than feeling sorry for himself.

Inside the mudroom, Jake yanked on his yellow rain boots - the ones with treads like tractor tires.

His jacket smelled like wet dog from last week's camping trip.

The flashlight sat on the shelf next to Mom's gardening gloves, its battery half-dead but working.

Through the window, the forest looked different.

Darker.

The familiar trail to the creek had vanished behind curtains of rain.

Jake's hand paused on the doorknob.

Going into the woods by himself during a storm probably was not his smartest idea.

But Coach always said showing up for your team meant doing the hard stuff, not simply the easy stuff.

"Someone needs help," Jake whispered to his reflection in the glass.
He clicked on the flashlight.

Its beam cut through the mudroom's shade, small but determined.

Jake opened the door.

Rain drummed against the porch roof like a thousand tiny fingers.

Water gushed from the gutters in silver streams.

His warm, dry house felt far away.

He stepped into the rain.

The forest closed around him like a wet, green tunnel.

Rain found every gap in the canopy, trickling down his neck in icy ribbons.

Jake swept his flashlight across stick ferns that bowed under water's weight, their fronds creating dripping archways.

"Hello?"
he called.

"I am here to help!"
Only the rain answered, pattering endlessly on leaves.

Jake ducked under a branch thick with moss.

His boot landed on something slick - mud that felt like butter.

His arms windmilled, grabbing at air.

The world tilted sideways.

THUMP.

Pain shot through his hip as he hit the ground.

Mud sprayed everywhere.

He slid downhill, roots scraping his palms, until he stopped in a puddle.

His flashlight sailed through the air, hit a rock, and went dim with a small *plink*.

Jake lay there, breathing hard.

Cold mud soaked through his jeans.

His hands stung.

And that crying - he could not hear it anymore.

Simply rain, endless rain, drumming on everything.

His throat got tight and hot.

This whole rescue was turning into a disaster.

He could not even walk straight, much less help anyone.

"Bad idea," he muttered, wiping mud from his eyes.

"Jake?"
What are you doing down there?

Emma stood on the path above, her purple umbrella bright as a flower against the gray trees.

Her frog-printed boots splashed through puddles as she hurried over.

"You look like you fought a mud puddle and turned around."
Jake explained everything - the canceled game, the mysterious crying, his drowned flashlight.

Each word made his mission sound more impossible.

But Emma's face lit up like he had simply told her about buried treasure.

"Wait, someone is crying in the forest?"
We have to find them!

"I cannot even find the trail home," Jake said.
"And I turned around the sound."
Emma shifted her umbrella to cover both their heads.

"That is exactly why you need a partner."
My abuela says adventures are safer with friends.

Plus, I have excellent hearing.

Jake felt his chest loosen, simply a little.

The forest did not seem quite so overwhelming with Emma beside him, her determination as bright as her purple umbrella.

They stood perfectly still, listening past the rain's static.

There - faint as a mouse's whisper - a small whimper from farther in the trees.

"That way," Emma pointed left.
"Come on!"
They walked together into the dripping forest, Emma's umbrella bobbing between branches like a beacon.

Jake turned in a slow circle.

Every direction looked exactly the same - towering Douglas firs whose branches wove together overhead, blocking the sky.

Stick ferns grew chest-high, hiding any path they would have followed.

"I do not hear anything," Emma said quietly.
Rain found gaps in the umbrella, sliding cold fingers down Jake's collar.

That heavy feeling from earlier came rushing back, bigger now.

They were turned around.

Whoever was crying might be getting farther away every second.

Or maybe there was never anyone out here at all.

"We messed up."
Jake's voice came out scratchy.

"I messed up."
I should have simply stayed home and felt sorry for myself like normal.

Emma's umbrella drooped.

Even her cheerful frog boots looked dull, covered in brown mud.

Jake's chest ached worse than when he had fallen.

He had wanted to turn his bad day into something good, to help someone who needed it.

Instead, he had dragged Emma into a wet, confusing forest with nothing to show for it.

Some helper he was.

The rain drummed on, cold and relentless.

Somewhere out there, someone might still need them.

But Jake felt too small and turned around to save anyone.

Emma set down her water bottle and pulled Jake into a hug.

The umbrella tipped sideways, spilling water down their shoulders, but neither of them moved.

She smelled like cinnamon and rain.

"Hey," she said softly.
"Remember why we came out here?"
Someone is worried.

Probably simply as turned around as we are.

Maybe more.

Jake closed his eyes.

Emma's hug felt steady and warm, like his mom's hugs after hard soccer games.

It reminded him why he had walked over that fence in the first place.

Not because helping was easy or comfortable.

Because someone needed it.

"One more try," Jake said.
"But we listen with everything we have."
They froze, barely breathing.

Rain pattered on leaves like tiny drums.

A raven called somewhere high in the canopy.

And then - so faint Jake almost missed it - a trembling whimper.

"There!"
Emma's finger shot toward a wall of salal bushes.

Jake pushed through first.

Branches tugged his jacket.

Wet leaves slapped his face.

The whimpering grew louder, more desperate.

His heart hammered as they hurried through the undergrowth, following that small, worried sound farther into the forest's green heart.

Behind the thickest tangle of ferns, beneath a fallen log draped in emerald moss, a golden puppy huddled against the wood.

Its fur caught to its body in wet clumps.

It shook so hard that raindrops flew from its ears like tiny fireworks.

"Oh," Emma whispered.
The puppy looked up with huge brown eyes full of worry and exhaustion.

Its whimper broke something open in Jake's chest.

Jake moved slowly, careful not to scare it more.

He shrugged off his yellow jacket.

Mud squelched under his knees as he crouched down.

"Hey, buddy."
You are okay now.

We have you.

The puppy was too tired and cold to run.

Jake wrapped his jacket around the tiny, shivering body and lifted it against his chest.

Through the wet fabric, he felt the puppy's racing heartbeat begin to slow.

Its cold nose pressed into his neck.

Emma pulled out her phone, her voice calm as she explained to someone about finding a turned around puppy near the old-growth Douglas firs by Maple Street.

As Jake held the puppy close, sharing his warmth, something amazing happened.

That heavy disappointment about his ruined Saturday - it lifted like fog burning off in sunshine.

The frustration about getting turned around - gone.

In their place grew something warm and bright, like the first day of spring after a long winter.

The puppy's shivering stopped.

It let out a small sigh and nestled farther into Jake's arms, finally safe.

"The rescue center is coming," Emma said, kneeling beside them.
"And they are bringing the puppy's family."
They have been searching since this morning.

Jake looked at the puppy's peaceful face, then at Emma's proud smile, then out at the rain-washed forest.

Water made everything shimmer - moss glowing emerald green, ferns sparkling silver, bark shining like polished wood.

The rain did not seem cold anymore.

It seemed alive, like the forest was breathing and growing all around them.

The puppy licked his chin with a tiny pink tongue, and Jake laughed - a real, full laugh that echoed through the ancient trees.
