## Story

## A Beach Adventure Begins

The morning tide had left silver bubbles along the sand. Nia, Pip, Coral, and Dash scuttled out from their rocky pool, their little claws clicking as they followed the wet line of the beach.

"Grandpa Crab says a moon shell shines near the far rocks," Nia said.

"Then we should find it before the tide comes back," Pip said.

Coral carried a strip of seaweed for a flag. Dash carried a tiny pebble, in case a pebble became useful.

They promised to stay together, watch the waves, and stop if the sand became too dry for their feet.

"Crab Quest begins," Coral said, waving the seaweed flag.

## A Bumpy Search

The beach looked flat from their tide pool, but up close it was full of hills, puddles, and slippery stones.

A small wave rushed toward them. The four crabs dug their feet into the sand until the water swished around their legs and slid back to the sea.

"Everyone still here?" Nia asked.

"Still here," Dash said, shaking water from his shell.

A gull's shade swept over the sand. Pip spotted it first and clicked twice, their signal for hide. The crabs tucked under a ribbon of seaweed and stayed still until the shade passed.

"Good click," Coral whispered.

Pip smiled. "Good hiding."

They crossed a puddle on a bridge of flat stones, helped Dash free one wedged foot, and kept going until the far rocks rose ahead.

## The Worried Old Hermit Crab

Near the largest rock, something pale and round glowed in a crack. The moon shell was real.

"There it is," Nia said.

They hurried closer, but an old hermit crab stepped in front of the crack. His shell was faded and chipped at one edge.

"Back up," he grumbled. "That shell is not for grabbing."

"We only wanted to see it," Coral said.

"Seeing is fine," the hermit crab said. "Taking is not."

Dash looked at the chipped edge of the old shell on the crab's back. "Do you need the moon shell for a new home?"

The hermit crab blinked. "Yes. It is the right size, but it is wedged under the rock. I have guarded it all morning because I cannot move it by myself."

"Then we can help," Nia said. "We are good at tiny spaces."

The hermit crab studied their small claws. "Carefully," he said.

## A Better Plan

The four crabs gathered beside the rock and made a plan before touching anything.

"If we pull all at once, it might crack," Pip said.

"What if we clear the pebbles first?" Coral asked.

"And use my pebble to prop it up," Dash said.

The hermit crab nodded. "That could work."

Nia and Coral brushed sand away from the crack. Pip lifted one tiny pebble at a time. Dash slid his useful pebble under the shell's edge.

The moon shell shifted with a soft scrape.

"Stop," the hermit crab said. "A wave is coming."

## The Hermit Crab Gets Worried

The wave curled around the rocks faster than the little crabs expected. Water tugged at the moon shell and made it wobble.

"My new home!" the hermit crab cried.

"Hold the seaweed rope," Nia called.

Coral looped her seaweed strip around the shell. Dash and Pip braced their feet in the sand. Nia waited until the wave slid back, then counted, "One, two, pull."

The moon shell popped free and rolled into a shallow puddle.

The hermit crab hurried after it, then stopped. "I shouted," he said quietly. "I was worried I would lose it."

"We were worried too," Pip said. "But the shell is safe."

## The Big Surprise

The moon shell was even prettier up close. Its inside shone pink, silver, and cream, like sunrise on wet sand.

"It truly does shine," Dash said.

The hermit crab turned around and backed carefully into the moon shell. It fit him perfectly. He wiggled once, twice, and settled in with a relieved sigh.

"Thank you," he said. "I was guarding it because I needed it, not because I wanted to keep everyone away."

Nia touched the old chipped shell he had left behind. Its inside had the same soft glow.

"You may take that one back to your tide pool," the hermit crab said. "It is too small for me now, but it can still be your treasure."

The little crabs clicked their claws in delight.

## A Friend Beneath the Shell

On the way home, Nia, Pip, Coral, and Dash carried the empty shell together.

They told Grandpa Crab about the wave, the seaweed rope, and the hermit crab's perfect new home.

"So the moon shell was not yours to keep," Grandpa Crab said.

"No," Coral said, placing the small shell in the tide pool. "But the quest still gave us treasure."

Pip tapped the shell gently. It made a bright little click.

"And a new friend," Nia said.

Across the beach, the hermit crab lifted one claw from his shining moon shell. The four small crabs waved back, and the whole shore felt wider than it had that morning.
