## Story

## Sunny and His Friends at the Beach

Sunny was a small orange starfish who lived in a coral garden near the beach. His friends, Ruby, Blue, and Speckle, liked to meet him every morning where the sand dipped into a shallow tide pool.

"Race you to the shell arch," Ruby called.

Sunny laughed and pushed across the sand with his five little arms. Blue slid beside him. Speckle stopped twice to admire tiny bubbles clinging to sea grass.

They built a castle from wet sand and decorated it with pearly shells. Then they played hide-and-seek among the coral stones while silver fish flickered overhead.

The water was warm and clear, but the tide had begun to turn. A long strip of kelp lifted from the sand and pointed toward open water like a green ribbon.

## Swept Away by Strong Currents

Sunny noticed the pull first. The water tugged at the shells on their castle and rolled them into the pool.

"Hold the coral," Sunny called.

Ruby grabbed a smooth stone. Blue and Speckle reached for the same bit of sea grass, but the current pulled it loose.

"Sunny!" Speckle cried.

Sunny pressed all five arms flat against the coral. The current carried Ruby, Blue, and Speckle across the sandy channel and into a thick patch of seaweed near the reef wall.

For a moment, Sunny wanted to rush after them. Then he remembered what Grandma Star had told him: "Fast water is stronger than a small starfish. Look first. Move carefully."

Sunny looked. His friends were frightened, but he could still see them. The seaweed held them close to the reef, not out in the open water.

"I am coming," Sunny called. "Stay still if you can."

## Sunny's Brave Rescue Mission

Sunny did not swim straight into the current. He moved along the edge of the reef, where the water was calmer and the rocks gave him places to grip.

A blue fish darted past him. "Wrong way for a little star," the fish said. "The tide is pulling hard."

"My friends are caught," Sunny said. "I need the quiet path."

"Follow the rocks until the kelp turns gold," the fish told him. "Octavia lives there. She knows every current."

Sunny thanked the fish and kept going. He counted the rocks as he moved: one barnacle rock, two sponge rocks, three rocks shaped like sleepy turtles.

At last he reached a curtain of golden kelp. Behind it, two kind eyes opened.

"Octavia?" Sunny asked.

"I see a worried starfish," said the octopus. "Tell me what happened."

## The Seaweed Tangle

Octavia listened without interrupting. Then she lifted one careful tentacle and pointed toward the reef wall.

"The current is still strong in the middle," she said, "but the seaweed patch is safe if no one struggles. We will go around."

Sunny felt smaller than ever. "Can I help?"

"You already are," Octavia said. "You looked before you moved. That is brave."

They reached the seaweed patch from the calm side. Ruby, Blue, and Speckle were tangled but safe.

"My arms are tangled," Blue said.

"Mine too," Ruby whispered.

"Do not pull hard," Octavia said. "Seaweed tightens when everyone wriggles."

Sunny found the first loop around Speckle's arm. He nudged it loose with the tip of one arm while Octavia held the rest of the seaweed steady.

"One loop gone," Sunny said.

"Keep talking," Speckle said. "It makes me less worried."

So Sunny talked about their sandcastle, Ruby's fast racing, Blue's best hiding spot, and the funny bubble that had clung to Speckle's nose. By the time he finished, all three friends were free.

## Meeting Octavia, The Wise Octopus

Octavia led them into her cozy grotto to rest before the swim home. Red, gold, and rich green seaweed decorated the walls like waving curtains.

She gave each starfish a small curl of sweet sea lettuce from a garden in the rocks.

"How do we get home without the current pushing us again?" Ruby asked.

"By waiting for the water to slow," Octavia said. "The ocean changes. When it is too strong, we pause."

She showed them a trail of glowing kelp dots along the reef. "When the tide eases, follow these lights. They lead back to the tide pool."

Sunny watched the kelp glow softly, one dot after another.

"Courage is not always rushing," Octavia said. "Sometimes courage is stopping, thinking, and asking for help."

Sunny looked at his friends. They all nodded.

## Home Safe and Sound

When the water grew gentle, Sunny and his friends followed the glowing kelp trail home. Octavia swam beside them until the tide pool came into view.

Their families were waiting near the shell arch.

"Sunny found help," Blue said.

"And he kept talking while we were worried," Speckle added.

Sunny's cheeks warmed. "Octavia knew the safe path."

Grandma Star hugged him with all five arms. "Then you were wise enough to listen."

The next morning, the friends rebuilt their sandcastle farther from the channel. They added a line of kelp flags to show where the fast water began.

"This one is a castle," Ruby said.

"And a reminder," Sunny said.

The tide pool sparkled around them. Sunny still liked adventures, but now he knew the best ones left every friend safe enough to tell the story afterward.
