## Story

Luna's whiskers twitched in the quiet library. Sunbeams danced across rows and rows of books. She pulled one from the shelf, then another, but the pictures inside did not make her smile. Books were wonderful. But reading by herself felt like eating birthday cake with no one to share it.

She pressed her nose against the window. Outside, two squirrels chased each other around a tree, chattering and laughing. Luna's ears drooped. Her chest felt hollow, like a bell that forgot how to ring.

Luna stretched high, reaching for a book with a shiny red cover. Her paw bumped something. _Flutter, flutter, flutter._ A bookmark tumbled down.

Luna caught it between her paws. She gasped. Blue as the sky. Silver stars stitched across it. Soft as a cloud.

Luna turned it over. Gold thread spelled words: _For Oliver, Love Grandma._

Her quick mind noticed how the edges curled slightly. How careful hands had sewn each tiny star. How much love lived in those stitches.

"Someone made this," she whispered.

The bookmark felt warm against her paws.

Luna hopped to the reading chair and curled into its cushions. She held the bookmark against her fur. _So soft. So pretty._

Her imagination raced. She could mark pages in her adventure books. In her fairy tale books. In all her favorite stories. The bookmark would keep her company, page after page.

_Maybe I will feel less quiet inside if I keep it._

She tucked it close, imagining how the silver stars would peek from between pages. Hers. Only hers. A treasure no one could take away.

But her tummy felt funny. Squirmy. Wrong.

She looked at the name again. _Oliver._ Not _Luna._

_Sniff. Sniff._

Luna's ears shot up. _Sniff. Sniff. Sniff._

She crept to the edge of a tall bookshelf and peeked around. A small hedgehog crawled on the floor, checking under tables. His quills trembled. Tears dripped from his nose onto the carpet.

"Where is it?" he whispered. "Where, where, where?"

He looked behind chair legs. Under newspapers. Between dictionaries.

"Grandma gave it to me. I have to find it. I _have to._" His voice cracked like a twig snapping.

Luna's paws squeezed the bookmark tighter. Her heart beat fast against her ribs.

That was Oliver. _His_ bookmark. _His_ treasure from someone who loved him.

Luna stood still behind the bookshelf. Her clever mind whispered: _You could hide. Slip away. He would never know._

But her heart remembered something else. Sitting by the window. Watching friends play without her. That hollow, empty feeling that made everything gray.

Oliver was not only upset right now. Oliver had _misplaced_ something precious. Something made with love by someone special.

Luna looked down at the bookmark in her paws. The silver stars did not seem to sparkle anymore. They looked dull.

Her chest felt tight and warm at the same time, like hot cocoa and tears mixed together. _He needs this,_ she thought. _He needs it more than I do._

Luna took three slow breaths. Her legs felt wobbly, but she made them hop forward anyway.

"Oliver?"

The hedgehog jumped. His wet eyes looked up.

Luna hopped closer. Her paws shook, but she held them out steady. The bookmark lay across them like a gift.

"I found this. Is it yours?"

Oliver stared. His mouth made a little O shape. Then his whole face changed, like the sun bursting through clouds.

"MY BOOKMARK!" He carefully took it, pressing it against his heart. "Oh, oh, oh, thank you! THANK YOU!"

The hollow feeling in Luna's chest disappeared. Warmth spread through her like honey melting into tea.

"Grandma made this for me," Oliver said, his voice still wobbly. "It is my favorite thing in the whole world."

Luna's nose twitched. She had given up something beautiful. But somehow, she felt more full than empty.

Oliver wiped his eyes with his paw. Then he looked at Luna.

"Do you like stories?"

Luna nodded so hard her ears flopped.

"Want to read together? We can use Grandma's bookmark to mark our spot."

Luna's blue eyes grew wide as moons. "You would share it? With me?"

"Friends share special things," Oliver said, grinning. "That is what Grandma says."

_Friends._ The word felt like music.

They settled into the reading chair together. Oliver opened a book about a dragon who collected buttons. He placed the bookmark carefully on page one. Luna snuggled close to see.

The chair did not feel too big anymore. It felt right.

"Look, that dragon has purple scales!" Oliver pointed.

Luna giggled. "And seventeen buttons!"

"Let us count them!"

They turned pages together, counting buttons and laughing. Every few pages, Oliver let Luna move the special bookmark. The silver stars caught the light, winking at them both.

Outside, the sun painted everything golden. Inside, the library was not quiet anymore. It was full of giggles and shared stories and two friends who felt happy together.
