## Story

## A New Friend from the Sea

Daphne lived in a small blue house near the ocean. She loved the sea from the porch: the white foam, the gull calls, the way sunlight flashed on the waves.

Up close, the waves felt different. They rushed at her toes, loud and cold, and Daphne always stepped back.

One morning, Aunt Mira walked with her to the quiet cove. "We can stay where your feet feel safe," she said.

Daphne nodded and held her towel tight.

Then a smooth gray head rose from the water.

"A dolphin," Daphne whispered.

The dolphin clicked softly and dipped under the surface. When he came back, he nudged a floating leaf toward her like a gift.

"Hello," Daphne said.

The dolphin clicked again. Aunt Mira smiled. "I think he heard you."

## Exploring the Underwater World

Daphne did not swim out to sea that day. She knelt at the edge of a tide pool while Aunt Mira stayed beside her. The dolphin circled in the calm shallows beyond the rocks.

The tide pool was its own tiny world. A striped fish slipped behind green sea grass. A snail traced a shining path over stone. A small crab lifted one claw as if waving.

"I can see so much from here," Daphne said.

The dolphin rolled once in the water, showing his pale belly. Daphne laughed before she could stop herself.

"Do you want to try one step?" Aunt Mira asked.

Daphne looked at the shallow water covering the sand. She took one step in. The wave wrapped around her ankles and slipped away.

"I did it," she said.

## Floating in the Cove

Daphne returned to the cove all week. Some days she only watched. Some days she stood in ankle-high water while Aunt Mira held her hand. The dolphin came often, but he never pushed close. He waited in the water until Daphne was ready to wave.

"I want to float today," Daphne said on Friday.

Aunt Mira checked the calm water and fastened Daphne's bright swim vest. "We stay inside the cove," she said. "If you want to stop, we stop."

Daphne floated on her back. The sky looked huge. The dolphin swam in a slow circle nearby, sending gentle ripples under her shoulders.

"I am still a little nervous," Daphne said.

"That is allowed," Aunt Mira said. "Brave can feel nervous and still take one careful step."

## Adventures with Friends

By the next low tide, Daphne packed a small notebook, a pencil, and two apple slices. She sat on a dry rock and drew what she saw: three snails, one crab, a feather, and the dolphin's curved fin.

The dolphin brought something too. He nudged a blue bottle cap toward the shore.

"That does not belong in the water," Daphne said.

She picked it up and dropped it into Aunt Mira's beach bag. Then she found a bit of string near the rocks and a crumpled snack wrapper tucked in the sea grass.

"Maybe we can make the cove safer," Daphne said.

The dolphin clicked and slapped the water with his tail.

## Guiding Fish Through the Reef

Daphne still felt nervous when the waves grew loud. She still liked having Aunt Mira close. But now she knew the cove well enough to notice when something was wrong.

A little school of fish had drifted into a shallow pool after the tide changed. They flickered back and forth, searching for the opening to the sea.

The dolphin clicked from the channel beyond the rocks.

"The water path is over there," Daphne said.

She did not step into the center channel. She stayed on the safe rock and pointed while Aunt Mira gently moved a loose strand of sea grass from the narrow gap. The fish found the moving water and slipped through one by one.

The last fish vanished into the cove. The dolphin leaped once, bright in the sun.

Daphne waved with both hands. The ocean was still big. The waves were still loud. But Daphne had learned its edges, its quiet pools, and one gray friend who waited while she found her courage.
