## Story

## Discovery in the Tide Pools

Octo was a small octopus with eight curious arms and a habit of asking, "What is around that rock?"

One bright morning, the tide slipped away and left shallow pools between the stones. Octo had seen them from a distance, but today the water was calm enough to explore.

"I will go slowly," Octo said. "I will remember the way back."

In the first pool, a starfish lifted one arm.

"Hello," said the starfish. "The smooth rocks are slippery."

"Thank you," Octo said, placing one careful arm at a time.

In the next pool, a shy anemone opened like a tiny flower. A crab scuttled sideways past Octo and stopped beside a pebble path.

"That path leads to the rock nook," the crab said. "But only if you watch the tide."

Octo looked back at the reef, then forward at the stones. "Will you show me?"

## Discovering Drifted Treasures

The crab led Octo to a low nook where silver light flashed between two rocks.

Inside were not pirate treasures. They were drifted things: a spoon, a blue bottle cap, a cracked watch, and a toy car with one loose wheel.

"These came from above the water," Octo said.

"Some drift in after storms," said the crab. "Some are sharp. Some can pinch little fins."

Octo did not scoop everything up. First, they touched each object gently. The cracked watch had a sharp edge, so Octo wrapped it in sea grass. The bottle cap was light, so the crab carried it. The toy car was tucked under sand, so the starfish helped loosen it.

"Let us make a found-things pile near the high rock," Octo said. "Then the shore walkers can find it when the tide goes out."

## Keeping the Pool Safe

As they carried the objects out, a gull landed on the high rock.

"Caw! Shiny!"

The gull hopped toward the bottle cap.

"That one is not food," Octo called.

The gull tilted its head.

"It is hard and flat," Octo said. "It will not taste good, and a small fish could get caught under it."

The gull pecked once, made a face, and flapped to a safer snack of seaweed flies.

"Good explaining," said the starfish.

"Good not-pecking," Octo called to the gull.

## Sharing the Map

Octo looked at the nook, the pebble path, the slippery rock, and the safe pool where the anemone lived. There was too much to remember in one head.

"Can we make a map?" Octo asked.

The crab scratched lines in the sand. The starfish placed five pebbles for the five safest pools. The anemone added tiny shell chips where small creatures could rest.

Octo used a charcoal pebble to mark the nook of drifted things.

"This way," Octo said, "everyone can explore with a plan."

Soon other tide-pool creatures came to look. A young shrimp found the rest pool. A snail avoided the slippery rock. Two minnows followed the pebble path home before the tide turned.

Octo felt a warm fizz of pride. Not because they had found the nook first, but because everyone could use what they had found.

## Octo's New Wonder

At sunset, the tide began to rise again. Water filled the pebble path, softened the sand map, and lifted Octo gently from the pool.

"The map is washing away," the crab said.

"Then we will make it again tomorrow," Octo said.

The starfish waved one arm. The anemone folded closed for the night. The gull called from above, but this time it did not sound so sharp.

Octo swam back toward the reef with all eight arms moving in a happy rhythm.

"What is around that rock?" Octo wondered.

Then they smiled. Tomorrow, they would ask a friend to come and see.
