## Story

## The First Breath

Under a quiet moon, a tiny sea turtle tapped at his shell.

Tap. Tap. Crack.

At last, Pip pushed his head into the cool night air. Around him, other hatchlings shuffled in the sand. Ahead of them, the ocean shone silver beneath the moon.

"That is where we go," whispered the oldest hatchling.

Pip looked at the long beach between his nest and the waves. His flippers were small. The sand felt wide.

"One push at a time," Pip told himself.

He lifted one flipper, then the other, and began.

## Across the Sand

The sand was not flat like Pip had hoped. It rose in soft hills and dipped into cool little valleys. A broken shell blocked his path. Pip went around it. A tuft of dry grass scratched his chin. Pip backed up and tried another way.

Near a tide line, a small crab scuttled sideways.

"Careful, little one," the crab said. "The smooth sand is faster, but the footprints make good hiding places."

Pip listened. When a cloud softened the moonlight, he tucked beside a footprint and stayed still until the beach was quiet again.

"Thank you," Pip whispered.

The crab clicked one claw. "Keep your nose toward the brightest water."

## The First Wave

The water was louder up close. It rushed forward with a hiss, then slid back and tugged at the sand.

Pip stopped at the edge.

"It is bigger than I thought," he said.

A wave curled around his flippers. Pip slid backward, rolled once, and landed on his belly.

For a moment, he wanted to stay where the sand was still.

Then he remembered the moon path.

"One push at a time," Pip said again.

He pushed when the water came in. He held still when it pulled back. Push. Rest. Push. Rest.

At last, a gentle wave lifted him.

## The Big Blue

The ocean held Pip like a soft blue blanket. He paddled once, twice, and found that his flippers knew what to do.

Small fish flickered near the surface. A bit of sea grass waved below. The moonlight broke into tiny pieces around him.

"First night?" asked a silver fish.

"First everything," Pip said.

The fish swam beside him for a little while. Pip looked back once at the beach. It seemed far away now, but he could still see the path he had crossed.

He was small. The sea was wide. And Pip knew how to begin.
