## Story

## The Crabs' Beach Day

The morning tide slipped back from the beach and left smooth, damp sand behind.

Out came the crab crew.

Pip carried a shell. Dot dragged a ribbon of seaweed. Nib made tiny dots in the sand with the tips of his legs.

"This sand is perfect," said Pip.

"For digging?" asked Nib.

"For building," said Dot. "Let us make a castle."

The crabs clicked their claws. A castle sounded grand. A castle also sounded hard.

"We need jobs," Pip said.

Dot pointed with a claw. "Diggers, scoopers, smoothers, and shell keepers."

Every crab chose a job. Then the beach began to tick and patter with busy little feet.

## Gathering Materials

The shell keepers searched the tide line for empty shells. The scoopers rolled damp sand into neat piles. The smoothers pressed the walls flat with careful claws.

"Only empty shells," Dot reminded them. "If anyone lives inside, we leave it where it is."

Nib found a tiny shell with a round doorway. He peeked once, saw two little feelers, and set it back in the pool.

"Taken," he said.

Pip found a smooth white shell with nobody home. "Castle window!"

A gull landed nearby and tilted its head at the shiny pile.

The crabs did not chase or shout. They tucked the shells under a strip of seaweed until the gull looked elsewhere and flew toward the waves.

"Good hiding," said Pip.

"Good waiting," said Dot.

## Building the Sandcastle

The first tower leaned left.

"It looks tired," said Nib.

Pip packed more wet sand at the bottom. Dot pressed the sides. Nib made a small doorway with one careful scoop.

"Better," said Dot.

A small wave ran up the beach and nibbled the corner of the wall.

"Incoming water!" Pip called.

The crabs scurried back. The wave slid away, leaving a soft slump where the wall had been.

"The tide wants a door," Nib said.

So they built one. They shaped a little channel that let the next wave flow around the castle instead of through it.

"Now the water can visit," said Dot, "and leave politely."

## Crab Dance Party

By late afternoon, the castle had three towers, one seaweed flag, and a moat that shone like a ribbon.

The tallest tower leaned a little, but it held.

Pip scrambled to the top and waved both claws.

"Castle finished!"

The crab crew danced in a circle around the moat. Their feet made quick marks in the damp sand. Dot spun under the seaweed flag. Nib bowed to the doorway he had shaped.

A child walking with a grown-up stopped at a careful distance.

"Look," the child whispered. "A crab castle."

The crabs froze.

The child smiled and walked on without touching it.

The crabs danced again, even faster.

## The Tide Comes Back

The sun dropped lower, and the tide began to creep back.

"Will it wash away?" Nib asked.

"Some of it," said Dot.

Pip patted the wall once. "Then the sea gets a turn."

The first wave filled the moat. The second softened the doorway. The third carried the seaweed flag away.

The crab crew watched from a safe rock.

"We know where to build tomorrow," said Nib.

"And what jobs to choose," said Dot.

Pip looked at the smooth beach, ready for morning.

"Tomorrow," he said, "we make the moat wider."
