## Story

Sunny the sunflower loved making friends.

Every morning, she stretched her bright petals toward the sky and called out to everyone on the garden path.

"Good morning, Bumblebee!"

Bumblebee buzzed a cheerful reply.

"Beautiful day, Ladybug!"

Ladybug waved her spots.

Friendship was easy when you smiled at the world and the world smiled back.

One morning, Sunny noticed someone new.

A tiny purple flower grew beside the stepping stones, tucked where the path curved into shade.

"Hello there! I am Sunny!"

The little flower trembled.

Her petals folded inward.

Sunny leaned closer, her face bright with curiosity.

"Did you hear me? What is your name?"

The purple flower pressed herself against the cool stone and disappeared beneath her leaves.

Sunny's petals drooped.

A strange, uncomfortable feeling crept through her stem, like she had done something wrong but did not know what.

That afternoon, she found the old Oak Tree.

"There is a new flower by the path, but she will not talk to me. She just hides."

Oak's branches swayed thoughtfully.

"Where does she grow?"

"In the shade, between the stones."

"Ah. She is a violet. Tell me, Sunny, what did you do when you met her?"

Sunny's face grew warm.

"I said hello. Loudly. And I got really close so she could see me better."

"And what happened to your shade when you leaned in?"

Sunny pictured the moment.

Her bright face bending down.

Her shade falling across the violet's small space.

Her petals wilted with understanding.

"I covered her quiet spot, did I not?"

"Not everyone loves bright sunshine the way you do," Oak said gently.

"Some flowers need shade to feel safe. Your friendliness might have felt overwhelming."

The word stung because it was true.

"But I was just being myself!"

"I know. But making friends with someone different means understanding their world first, not just showing them yours."

Sunny bent her stem toward the shady side of the path the next morning.

The dim light felt strange and uncomfortable, like wearing someone else's petals.

"Hi," she whispered.

"I am sorry about yesterday."

One purple petal emerged.

Excitement bubbled up in Sunny's stem.

Without thinking, her whole face brightened with joy, and reflected sunlight bounced straight onto the violet's spot.

The violet vanished.

"No, wait! I did not mean to startle you."

But the damage was done.

Sunny tried again the next day.

She practiced speaking softly.

She tried to dim her natural glow.

But every time she got close, something went wrong.

A giggle escaped.

Her petals caught the light.

The violet retreated further each time.

By the third day, Sunny's stem ached from bending into shade.

Her petals felt tired from trying to be someone she was not.

"Maybe we are just too different," she told Oak, her voice small.

"Real friendship takes time and patience."

A sudden gust cut through Oak's words.

Gray clouds rolled across the sky.

The rainy wind arrived all at once.

Rain poured down in sheets.

Wind rushed through the garden, bending stems and scattering loose petals.

Sunny flattened herself against the ground, but the wind kept coming.

It pushed and pulled, tugging at her roots.

Her roots strained.

Her stem bent very low.

"Oak! Help!"

But Oak could not answer.

His massive branches tossed in the wind.

Leaves whipped through the air.

Even the wise old tree was busy holding steady.

Worry flooded through Sunny's stem.

She had always had Oak's wisdom when she needed it.

She had always had sunshine to make everything feel safe.

But now she had only wind, rain, and her own small, worried self.

Her roots pulled.

Her stem bent lower than it ever had before.

Then, impossibly soft beneath the storm's roar:

"Sunny!"

Sunny's petals trembled.

"Sunny! Over here!"

Violet had lifted her face from the shade.

Her tiny purple petals shook, but her voice stayed steady.

"The wind is gentler by the stones!" she called.

"Come to me!"

Sunny did not hesitate.

She stretched her stem toward the shady nook, reaching with all her strength.

Her roots found purchase in the protected space.

Her stem curved low behind the stepping stones.

And then, the rushing wind became a whisper.

Both flowers breathed hard in the quiet shelter.

"You helped me," Sunny whispered.

Violet's purple petals trembled.

"I felt so nervous. But you looked even more worried, so I thought maybe I could be brave just this once."

"That was the bravest thing I have ever seen."

"Really?"

Violet's voice was small.

"But you are the brave one. You kept trying to be my friend even when I kept hiding."

"I did not feel brave. I felt like I was failing at everything."

"You were not failing."

Violet's words came slowly, like she was picking each one carefully.

"I was nervous. Nervous that you would think I was boring because I am not bright and cheerful like you."

Sunny stared at her.

"Boring? You found this perfect sheltered place. You knew exactly what to do when I was struggling. I just shine brighter and hope for the best."

"But your brightness makes everyone happy!"

"And your calmness makes everyone feel safe."

They looked at each other while rain pattered gently around them.

The storm was passing.

"I was nervous about being too much for you," Sunny said.

"I was nervous about being too little for you," Violet replied.

Sunny felt something warm bloom in her stem, not from sunshine, but from friendship.

"Will you tell me about living in the shade? I want to understand your world."

"Only if you tell me about the sunshine. I have always wondered what it feels like."

"Deal."

When the storm passed, something new appeared on the garden path.

Right where sunshine met shade, Sunny and Violet created a meeting place.

Sunny learned to soften her glow there.

Violet learned to lift her face a little higher.

Other flowers noticed.

Shy Morning Glories crept closer.

Bold Marigolds ventured into shade.

The in-between place filled with flowers who had never talked before: some bright, some quiet, all different, all welcome.

Oak's branches rustled with pleasure.

"You have both grown wise."

Sunny and Violet smiled at each other, one bright and beaming, one soft and gentle, both brave in their own ways.

"We are still learning," they said together.
