## Story

Every morning, Whiskers the orange kitten leaped onto the windowsill and pressed her nose against the cool glass.

She watched raindrops race each other down the window, batting at them with her paw.

Sometimes she pounced at her own reflection, tumbling sideways with pure joy.

Rain or shine, the window was her favorite place in the whole house.

One gray afternoon, the sky opened up.

Rain drummed against the roof like a thousand tiny paws.

Whiskers settled onto her windowsill perch, ready to watch the storm, when she noticed something peculiar.

A spider clung to the outside of the window, pressed flat against the glass.

Whiskers had never seen anything quite like it.

Eight legs.

Eight!

That was four more than she had, and four more than she expected.

The spider's body was small and shiny, nothing like the fluffy creatures Whiskers knew.

Her ears swiveled back.

Her tail twitched uncertainly.

"You are very different," Whiskers whispered to the glass.

The spider shifted slightly, one leg at a time, moving away from a stream of water running down the window frame.

Whiskers watched as the rain grew heavier.

Wind pushed the water sideways, soaking everything.

The spider had nowhere to go.

It pressed tighter against the glass, but water kept finding it.

Part of Whiskers wanted to look away.

Mother Cat had always said, "Be careful with creatures you do not know."

The birds outside played with other birds.

The squirrels chased other squirrels.

Nobody talked to spiders.

But Whiskers' chest felt tight watching the spider struggle.

Its legs trembled with cold.

"Do you need help?" she asked softly.

The spider seemed to look at her through the glass.

It raised one leg, then another, like it was trying to communicate.

Whiskers' whiskers drooped.

What if the spider needed help?

What if being different did not matter when someone needed help?

Whiskers faced a difficult choice.

She could stay safe and warm on her side of the window, or she could do something brave, something Mother Cat might not understand.

Her heart beat faster.

First, Whiskers tried scratching at the window latch, but her paws could not grip it properly.

She meowed loudly for help, but Mother Cat was cleaning upstairs and did not hear over the storm's noise.

Whiskers sat down hard, her tail wrapping around her paws.

She felt frustrated and small.

Then she remembered something.

The back door had a cat flap.

She could get outside!

But that meant going into the rain.

Getting cold and wet.

For a spider she did not even know.

Whiskers looked at the trembling creature one more time.

"Hold on," she said firmly.

"I am coming to help you."

She jumped down from the windowsill and raced through the house.

Her paws slipped on the kitchen tiles as she rounded the corner.

The cat flap loomed ahead.

This was the moment.

Whiskers could turn back.

Stay dry.

Stay comfortable.

Or she could push through that flap and help someone who needed her, even if they had more legs than she expected and looked nothing like her.

She took a steady breath and pushed.

The rain hit her like a cold splash.

Her fur flattened instantly.

She gasped, but kept moving along the side of the house toward the front window.

Wind pushed against her.

Rain stung her eyes.

But Whiskers pressed forward until she reached the window where the spider clung.

"I am here!" she called over the storm's roar.

Up close, the spider looked even smaller.

Its legs shook with cold and exhaustion.

Without thinking, Whiskers positioned her body between the spider and the worst of the rain.

Water soaked her back, but the spider had a moment of shelter.

"Step onto my head," Whiskers said gently.

"Hurry!"

The spider hesitated for just a heartbeat, then carefully, delicately, stepped onto Whiskers' head between her ears.

Its legs felt feather-light and tickly.

Whiskers turned and carefully made her way back to the cat flap.

Each step was deliberate.

She could not shake off water or she might lose her passenger.

Inside, she dripped onto the floor, but she did not stop until she reached the sunny corner by the bookshelf where dust motes danced in the light.

She lowered her head so the spider could step onto a warm, dry book.

The spider did something amazing then.

It moved its eight legs in a rippling pattern, like a wave, like a dance.

Whiskers saw how graceful those legs were, how each one moved with purpose and beauty.

"Your legs are wonderful," Whiskers breathed.

"I was wrong to think they were strange. They are perfect for you!"

The spider settled onto the book, slowly warming up.

It seemed to nod at her, one leg lifting in what might have been a thank you.

Mother Cat found them there later, Whiskers still damp and the spider resting peacefully on the book.

"What happened here?" Mother Cat asked.

"I made a friend," Whiskers said proudly.

"A friend who is different from me, but that makes them even more interesting!"

Mother Cat looked at the spider, then at her brave, soggy kitten, and smiled.

From that day forward, Whiskers looked at her window differently.

She noticed the beetle with the shimmering green shell.

She watched the moth with wings like soft gray clouds.

She saw the ladybug with cheerful spots.

Each creature was different.

Each one was wonderful in their own way.

And whenever the rain came, Whiskers kept watch at her window, ready to help any friend who needed her, no matter how many legs they had.
