## Story

The Rainbow Waterfall caught the sunrise, splitting light into a thousand dancing colors.

Shimmer pressed herself farther into the mist behind the cascading water, where the rocks felt cool against her silver coat.

Laughter tumbled across the sanctuary.

Through the misty veil, Shimmer watched Star and Comet race circles around Crystal Meadow, their horns catching the morning light.

They looked so perfectly happy together.

Shimmer's throat felt tight.

Mama had left three sunrises ago to heal sick unicorns in the Far Mountains.

Three whole days without her warm nuzzles or gentle voice.

A dragonfly hovered near Shimmer's nose, its wings catching rainbow light.

She did not blink.

What if something happened to Mama?

What if the trip took too long?

Her horn flickered once, twice, then faded to barely a glow.

The heavy feeling in her chest grew heavier.

Shimmer watched Star leap over moon-white stones.

She watched Comet's golden tail stream behind him like ribbons of sunlight.

Her hooves tingled with the urge to run beside them.

But what would she even say?

*Hello, I miss my mama and my words stick in my throat?*

The ache felt too enormous to carry anymore.

Like trying to hold an entire storm cloud inside her small body.

"I do not want to feel this way by myself," she whispered to the waterfall.

The words surprised her own ears.

Shimmer breathed in slowly, tasting morning dew and wild honeysuckle.

Maybe being near the others would help.

She did not have to speak.

Just being closer might make the heavy feeling lighter.

Her legs trembled as she stepped into the sunlight.

Purple morning glories lined the path to Crystal Meadow, their faces turned toward the warming sky.

Each step felt like a very long walk.

What if she reached the meadow and froze?

What if her voice disappeared completely?

But the thought of staying by herself behind the waterfall felt worse than trying.

Shimmer walked slowly, her hooves barely whispering against the clover.

The meadow drew closer.

She could hear Comet's delighted whinny now, could see dewdrops sparkling on Star's silver coat.

Her heart hammered against her ribs.

"Just get closer," she told herself.

"That is all."

Just closer.

Shimmer stopped at the meadow's edge where grass met wildflowers.

The other foals swirled past like dancers - so close their movements stirred the air, yet impossibly distant.

Her throat closed up completely.

All the words she had practiced vanished.

*I miss Mama.

I miss my mama.

Can I be near you?* They stayed somewhere inside, refusing to surface.

Star pranced by without glancing her direction.

Comet leaped a rainbow-colored stone, completely absorbed in the game.

A tear splashed onto a four-leaf clover.

Then another.

Shimmer's vision blurred.

Nobody saw her standing there.

She had been so brave to come this far, and it had not mattered at all.

She still felt by herself, even in a crowd, which somehow hurt even more.

She turned to slip away.

"Hello, little one."

Shimmer's head jerked up.

An older unicorn with a coat like moonlight stood beside her, kind eyes warm as candlelight.

"You look like you are carrying something very heavy," the unicorn said gently.

"I am Luna."

"Would you like to sit with me under that willow tree?"

Luna settled onto soft grass beneath drooping branches, away from the boisterous games.

She did not fire questions at Shimmer.

She did not crowd her.

Just waited, patient as starlight.

Shimmer's legs wobbled.

Someone had actually noticed her.

Someone had seen.

She moved closer to Luna, pulse racing.

"I want to tell you," Shimmer began.

Her voice came out scratchy and small.

Luna leaned in slightly, expression encouraging but not pushy.

"I miss my mama," Shimmer whispered.

"She has been gone three whole days, and I feel heavy inside."

Thunder cracked across the sky like a breaking branch.

Shimmer jumped.

Luna's head snapped toward the bruised clouds.

Rain began hammering down - fat, soaking drops that sent unicorns scattering in every direction.

"To the Great Oak!"

someone shouted over the rising wind.

The meadow exploded into chaos.

Shimmer spun around searching for Luna, but the older unicorn had vanished into the stampede.

Water streamed into Shimmer's eyes.

Her hooves slipped on grass turning to mud.

"Luna?"

she called, but the storm devoured her small voice.

Everyone was running away.

Luna was gone.

Shimmer had finally started sharing her ache, and now she had missed her only chance at comfort.

Rain pounded her coat flat.

Shimmer's legs shook as she stumbled toward the shelter, colder and more upset than she had ever felt.

The heavy feeling in her chest turned to stone.

Inside the Great Oak's hollow trunk, golden light glowed from luminescent moss coating the walls.

Shimmer shook rain from her mane and found a corner behind a thick, gnarled root.

She curled into the smallest ball possible, making herself invisible.

All around her, unicorns huddled in groups, sharing warmth and whispered stories.

But Shimmer pressed herself against the root, by herself again.

Thunder rumbled outside like a disappointed sigh.

A tear rolled down her nose and disappeared into her wet coat.

She had tried so hard to be brave.

It had not mattered.

"Shimmer?"

She looked up through blurry eyes.

Luna stood there, mane dripping wet, with Star, Comet, and three other foals gathered behind her.

"I have been searching everywhere for you," Luna said softly.

"I am so sorry we got separated in the storm. These friends wanted to come find you with me."

The foals settled around Shimmer in a gentle half-circle on the soft moss.

They did not crowd too close or speak too loudly.

Just sat near enough to share warmth.

"Luna told us you were hurting," Star said quietly.

"We would like to help, if you want."

Shimmer's heart thumped hard against her ribs.

They wanted to help?

They actually cared?

Luna nodded encouragingly.

"You started to tell me something important before the storm came. Would you like to try again?"

"We are all listening now."

Shimmer looked at each face.

They had stopped playing.

They had come looking for her.

They were simply here.

Waiting.

Ready to listen.

"My mama left three days ago," Shimmer began.

Her voice shook but kept going.

The words felt like lifting thorns from her chest: painful but necessary.

"She went to help sick unicorns in the Far Mountains. I know that is important work, but I miss her so much. I feel like there is a hole right here."

She touched her chest with her nose.

"And I have felt so worried she might not come back, and I did not know how to tell anyone because my words get caught."

Her voice cracked.

But this time, gentle nuzzles met her tears instead of silence.

Star pressed her warm nose against Shimmer's shoulder.

Comet leaned his head against hers.

"I felt exactly like that when my papa went to the Northern Lights," Comet admitted quietly.

"Like part of me was missing and might never come back."

"Me too, when my sister left for Rainbow Academy," Star added.

"I cried for two whole days and hid in my favorite cave."

"Missing someone you love is one of the hardest feelings," Luna said softly.

"But sharing that ache with friends? It does not make the missing go away, but it makes the weight lighter to carry."

Shimmer realized Luna was right.

The ache in her chest was still there: she still missed Mama terribly, but it did not feel quite so crushing anymore.

Like the other foals were helping her shoulder the burden.

"Your mama will come back," Star said firmly.

"They always do."

"But until then, you do not have to carry the heavy feelings by yourself."

"You can tell us anytime you are missing her," Comet added.

"That is what friends do."

"They help carry the heavy things."

Friends.

Something warm bloomed in Shimmer's chest, spreading outward like sunrise.

Her horn began to glow: softly at first, then brighter, casting tiny rainbows on the Great Oak's curved walls.

The other foals' horns responded, their lights mingling and dancing until the whole shelter sparkled like the inside of a prism.

Shimmer still missed Mama.

That had not changed.

But now she understood something new: she did not have to carry heavy feelings by herself.

Friends helped shoulder the weight together.

And maybe next time one of them felt heavy inside, she could be the one to notice.

The one to sit beside them and listen quietly.

Outside, the rain softened to a gentle patter against leaves.

Luna began humming a melody that sounded like wind chimes.

The other foals joined in, their voices weaving together.

Shimmer added her voice too - quiet at first, then stronger.

Her sparkle had been waiting for friends to help it shine all along.
