## Story

## The Accident

Lily worked in the castle, dusting shelves, folding towels, and carrying fresh flowers to sunny rooms.

She liked helping, but she often moved too quickly when she felt nervous.

One day, while dusting the king's room, Lily turned too fast and bumped a blue vase with her elbow.

The vase tipped to the floor and broke into shining pieces.

Lily's cheeks burned. She swept the pieces into a cloth and almost hurried away.

Then she stopped at the door.

Hiding the pieces would not put the vase back together.

## The Confession

Lily's heart beat fast as she walked to the king's study with the wrapped pieces in her hands.

"Come in," said the king from inside.

Lily opened the door. "Your Majesty," she whispered. "I broke the blue vase while I was dusting. I am sorry."

The king looked at the cloth. His face was serious.

"Thank you for telling me," he said after a quiet moment. "The vase mattered to me, and honesty matters too."

"Can I make it right?" Lily asked.

"You can help Tom in the garden this month," said the king. "The garden needs careful hands before the spring show. Careful work is a good way to practice repair."

"I will," Lily said.

## Lily's First Days in the Garden

Lily had never worked in a garden before. She did not know which tool loosened soil or how much water seedlings needed.

"First, we slow down," Tom said, handing her a small trowel. "Plants notice hurry."

Lily smiled a little. "So do vases."

Tom chuckled. "Then the garden is the right place to practice."

Each day, Lily learned one small task. She pulled weeds by the roots. She pressed compost around roses. She watered seedlings at the soil instead of splashing their leaves.

Tom told stories about patient seeds and stubborn vines. Lily asked questions, then tried again when she made mistakes.

On rainy days, they made garden puns while mud clung to their boots.

"Lettuce turnip this beet," Tom said.

Lily laughed so hard she nearly dropped the watering can, then set it down carefully first.

## The Big Garden Show

One morning, an invitation arrived for the town garden show.

Tom was excited, but by afternoon he looked pale and tired.

"I need to rest," he said. "The marigolds still need planting, and the signs are not painted."

"I can help," Lily said. "But I will need your plan."

Tom pointed to his notebook. Lily read each step aloud.

Plant marigolds by the gate. Tie the pea vines. Paint signs for mint, thyme, and lavender. Sweep the stone path.

Lily worked slowly. When she felt rushed, she put both feet on the ground and took a breath.

## A Garden Ready to Share

By the morning of the show, the garden was ready.

The roses twined around the arch. The marigolds glowed by the gate. Hand-painted signs stood beside each herb.

The judges walked slowly through the beds.

"This garden feels cared for," one judge said.

Lily looked at Tom, who was resting on a bench with a blanket around his shoulders.

They did not win the tallest ribbon, but they won a special prize for the garden visitors most wanted to sit in.

The king came to see it at sunset.

"You made amends with care," he said.

Lily touched the smooth edge of a new clay pot she had planted with blue flowers.

"I still wish I had not broken the vase," she said.

"I know," said the king. "And now something new is growing."
