## Story

## The Misfits

In a faraway kingdom, four knights trained a little differently from the rest.

Other knights marched in straight lines. These four sometimes marched in zigzags by mistake.

Sir Jasper had quick ideas. Sir Lancelot could spot a target from far away. Lady Francesca said what others were too shy to say. Sir George noticed when someone was having a hard day and needed help.

Some of the other knights called them the Misfits.

The name hurt, even when the four pretended it did not.

## A Challenge for the Misfits

One morning, the knights practiced in the courtyard.

Sir Jasper dropped his practice shield. It rolled in a circle and bumped a bucket.

Several knights laughed.

"I do not know why we train with them," one knight muttered.

Lady Francesca heard. Her chin lifted.

"We train because we want to help the kingdom too," she said.

Sir George picked up the shield. "Maybe we help differently."

That afternoon, the castle steward hurried into the courtyard.

"The harvest storehouse is locked from the inside," she said. "The winter grain lists are in there, and the key is missing."

"A mystery," Sir Jasper said.

"A useful one," said Lady Francesca. "Let us go."

## The Mission Begins

The four knights huddled beside the storehouse door.

Sir Lancelot noticed flour dust on the ground. Sir George noticed tiny scrape marks near a low window. Lady Francesca asked the steward when the door had last opened.

Sir Jasper looked at the lock, then at the flour trail.

"I do not think anyone broke in," he said. "I think something got out."

## The Misfits Find the Trail

The flour trail curved behind the bakery, crossed the herb garden, and ended near the old laundry shed.

"Listen," Sir George whispered.

Something rustled inside.

Lady Francesca opened the shed door a crack.

Six goats blinked back at her. One had the missing key ribbon looped around its horn.

"Goats," Sir Lancelot said.

"Hungry goats," Sir Jasper added, pointing to the nibbled grain list sticking out from a feed bucket.

"We need them calm," said Sir George. "Not chased."

## Past the Problem

The Misfits made a plan.

Sir Jasper tied bright ribbons to a broom and wiggled it like a festival flag. The goats stared.

Sir Lancelot set grain buckets in a line toward the pen.

Lady Francesca stood by the gate and said, "This way, your nibbling majesties."

Sir George moved slowly beside the goat with the key ribbon.

One by one, the goats followed the buckets into the pen. The last goat paused. Sir George held out a carrot and waited.

At last, the goat stepped close enough for him to loosen the ribbon from its horn.

## The Storehouse Opens

The key fit the storehouse lock.

Inside, sacks of grain leaned safely against the wall. The real list lay on a high shelf, untouched.

"The goats must have bumped the door shut when they sneaked in," the steward said. "Then one carried off the key ribbon."

Sir Jasper bowed to the goats. "A bold plan, if you enjoy breakfast."

Everyone laughed.

The other knights looked at the flour trail, the open lock, and the calm goats.

"That was clever," one said.

"And kind," said another.

Lady Francesca folded her arms. "Different does not mean useless."

"No," said the steward. "Today, different solved the problem."

## What They Remembered

That evening, the four knights sat near the training yard with cups of warm cider.

"My silly flag idea helped," Sir Jasper said.

"My far-looking helped," said Sir Lancelot.

"My questions helped," said Lady Francesca.

"My waiting helped," said Sir George.

They all looked across the yard, where the goats were now safely behind a repaired latch.

"Maybe Misfits is not such a bad team name," Sir Jasper said.

Sir George smiled. "Only if we get matching badges."

The next morning, four new badges hung on four practice tunics. Each one showed a key, a goat, and four different stars.
