## Story

## The Hidden Door

Lily, Max, Emma, and Alex were best friends. They liked the slide, the climbing wall, and the shady path behind the park benches.

One sunny afternoon, they were playing hide-and-seek when Emma noticed vines hanging in a straight line.

Behind the vines stood an old wooden door.

"I have never seen that before," Max said.

"Let us look carefully," Lily said.

The door was not heavy. When Alex pushed, it opened with a soft _click_.

Inside was a small round room with dusty shelves, old cushions, and pictures of keys painted on the walls.

"I think we found something amazing," Max said.

Then the door swung wider, and a row of brass locks clicked somewhere in the quiet room.

## A Room Full of Puzzles and Riddles

Lily, Max, Emma, and Alex turned around. The door had closed behind them.

Alex tried the handle. It would not move.

Emma pointed to a note on the wall. It read:

_"Welcome, puzzle solvers. Follow the clues to find the key. Stay calm. Work together."_

The friends looked at one another.

"What if we cannot open it?" Emma asked.

"We will figure it out together," Lily said.

They took a breath, then searched the room for clues.

There were jigsaw pieces on one table, wooden number blocks on another, and a maze drawn across the floor tiles.

"One puzzle at a time," Alex said.

"Good plan," said Lily.

## The Puzzles and Riddles

The friends started with the jigsaw puzzle. They spread the pieces on the floor where everyone could see.

Max sorted edge pieces. Emma matched colors. Alex found corners. Lily looked for the picture hidden in the shapes.

"It is a map of this room," Lily said when the last piece clicked into place.

The map showed a shelf with three stars painted above it.

On that shelf, they found wooden number blocks.

Emma noticed that the numbers matched the stars on the wall. Alex arranged them from smallest to largest. A drawer slid open and revealed a folded paper maze.

"The path starts at the blue tile," Max said.

They followed the maze across the floor, taking turns calling out left, right, and straight ahead. The path ended at a small box on a pedestal.

Lily lifted the lid.

## The Final Clue

Inside the box was one last riddle card.

_"I open the way, but I am not a door. I hide in plain sight, but I am not a floor. What am I?"_

"A key," Emma said.

"But where?" asked Max.

They looked in plain sight. Not under cushions. Not behind shelves.

Then Alex pointed to the painted keys on the wall. One was not painted at all. It was brass, hanging from a tiny hook.

"This must be it," he said, lifting it down.

The key turned smoothly in the lock. The old wooden door opened, and warm sunlight spilled into the room.

"We did it," Emma said.

"We stayed calm," said Lily.

Max grinned. "And we found the key in plain sight."

## What They Remembered

The four friends stepped back onto the park path.

The sun was bright overhead. The slide squeaked nearby. Everything ordinary looked a little more interesting than before.

"That was amazing," Lily said.

"We make a good puzzle team," Max said.

"Next time we find a hidden door," Emma said, "we should tell a grown-up before we go in."

"Yes," Alex said. "And maybe bring a flashlight."

They laughed, then walked home together.

The secret room stayed in their minds long after dinner. They had shared clues, listened to one another, and found the way out one careful step at a time.
