## Story

In the Whispering Woods, a brown bear named Benny lived beside a meadow of wildflowers.

Benny loved the smell of clover and warm honey. He also knew that many small creatures stepped aside when his big paws came near.

One sun-dappled morning, a tiny sound caught Benny's attention.

"Must keep going," came a tired buzz from beneath a drooping purple coneflower.

Benny parted the petals with one careful claw. A small honeybee rested on a leaf, her wings trembling.

"Hello," Benny whispered. "Are you all right?"

"I am Zip," said the bee. "I have been gathering nectar since sunrise. The tall flowers are hard to reach when the wind keeps pushing me sideways."

Benny sat still.

"I can see over the grass," he said. "I know where the tall blooms grow. Would that help?"

"It might," Zip said. "If you walk slowly."

Over the next few days, Zip showed Benny where bees landed and how flowers shared pollen. Benny showed Zip the sunny patches behind the blackberry bushes.

"Oh no," Benny said one afternoon.

A daisy bent under the edge of his paw.

"I am too big for meadow work."

Zip landed on a nearby stem. "Your paws are big. That means you have to look before each step. Big is not bad."

That evening, summer wind pushed through the meadow. The branch that held Zip's hive creaked and dipped.

"Our hive is shaking," Zip said. "The bees are inside, but the branch needs shelter from the wind."

"Tell me where to stand," Benny said.

Zip flew low and pointed with her tiny legs. Benny carried fallen branches one at a time. He placed them in a half-circle near the trunk, then tucked broad leaves between the sticks.

The wind pressed against the little wall instead of the hive.

The next morning, the hive hung steady.

"That wall helped," Zip said.

Benny looked at his paws. "I looked before each step."

"You did," said Zip. "Would you help us plant more tall flowers along the windy side?"

Through the warm months, Benny carried water in a smooth bark bowl. Zip and the other bees chose the best flower patches. Benny practiced kneeling before he reached, and the bees began saving tall-flower jobs for their careful bear helper.

By autumn, the windy side of the meadow glowed with sunflowers, clover, and purple coneflowers.

Forest neighbors came to see. Some tasted honey. Some helped gather seeds for next spring.

Zip rested on Benny's ear.

"We make a careful team," she said.

Benny stepped around a daisy, slow as a cloud drifting.

"Careful is getting easier," he said.
