## Story

The morning sun painted gold on the waves as Charlie stretched his orange paws in the sand.

Other cats liked windowsills. Charlie liked the tide pools. He liked smooth stones, tiny tracks, and empty shells with interesting shapes.

"Another good shell morning," Charlie purred.

He checked each shell before moving it. If anything lived inside, he left it where it was. If the shell was empty, he nudged it to his flat collecting rock.

The next morning, zigzag tracks crossed the wet sand near his favorite pool.

Charlie followed the marks around a rock.

A small creature stepped sideways from behind a pebble. It had a spiral shell, bright eyes, and careful little claws.

"Good morning," the creature said. "I am Herbert. I was measuring this purple shell."

Charlie tucked his tail close. "Measuring it?"

"To see if it fits," said Herbert. "Hermit crabs need empty shells for homes."

Charlie looked at his collecting rock. Some of those shells were empty. Some might be useful.

Over the next few days, Charlie watched Herbert from a polite distance. Herbert checked openings, tested weight, and tapped gently before trying a shell.

"You are careful," Charlie said one morning.

"Shells are more than pretty," Herbert said. "For me, a shell can be a safe room."

Charlie pushed a pale green shell toward him. "This one is empty. I checked."

Herbert tried it, turned once, and popped out. "Too narrow, but thank you."

That afternoon, the water crept closer to the collecting rock.

"The tide is turning," Herbert said. "We should move the shells above the wet line."

Charlie had been so busy looking at patterns that he had not noticed the water.

"I can carry the light ones," he said.

"I can roll the round ones," said Herbert.

Together they moved the empty shells to a higher rock. The next wave reached the old spot and slid away.

Charlie looked at the safe little pile.

"I used to collect shells only because they were pretty," he said.

"Pretty is fine," said Herbert. "Useful is fine too."

They sorted the shells into three groups: homes for crabs, decorations for Charlie's rock, and shells to leave exactly where they were.

Now Charlie still visits the tide pools at sunrise.

But he does not search by himself.

Herbert checks the small places. Charlie spots shells from the high rocks. When they find an empty shell, they ask the same question.

"Home, decoration, or leave it be?"

Most mornings, the answer is clear. Some mornings, they sit together and think.
