## Story

The fountain in Village Square splashed behind Jake, but he barely heard it.

Across the street, kids laughed in the community pool. A lifeguard sat in the tall chair. Parents watched from the shaded benches. Maria waved from the shallow end.

"Jake! Come in!" Maria called.

Jake gripped the bag with his new blue swim trunks inside. The tags were still attached.

"Maybe later," he called back.

He could run races. He could score goals. But he could not swim yet, and the word yet felt too small for such a big worry.

That evening, Jake watched a swimming video in his room.

"Front crawl, breaststroke, butterfly," he mumbled, windmilling his arms in the air. "I will figure it out myself. Then no one will know I felt nervous."

The next afternoon, Maria found him on the fountain bench.

"We are swimming Saturday," she said. "You should come."

Jake rubbed the strap of his bag.

"I cannot swim," he said before the excuse could hide the truth.

Maria's face softened.

"That is okay," she said. "I took lessons last summer. Carlos helps with the beginner group now, and Ms. Rivera teaches in the shallow end."

"You will not laugh?"

"No," Maria said. "Lots of people learn at different times."

Saturday arrived bright and warm. Jake stood at the shallow-end steps with Mom nearby, the lifeguard watching, and Ms. Rivera in the water.

"We start with safe steps," Ms. Rivera said. "One hand on the rail. One foot at a time."

Jake swallowed. "What if I am not good?"

"Then you will be learning," she said. "That is what lessons are for."

Jake stepped down until the water touched his knees. Then his waist. Then his elbows.

"I still feel nervous," he said.

"You can feel nervous here," Ms. Rivera said. "We will go slowly."

Over the next weeks, Jake learned to blow bubbles, hold the wall, float like a starfish, and kick with a board. When he swallowed water, Ms. Rivera helped him pause. When he got frustrated, Maria reminded him about her first lesson.

By summer's end, Jake's favorite bench sat empty most afternoons.

He was usually in the shallow lane, practicing steady kicks while Ms. Rivera watched. One day, a nervous new swimmer stood on the first step.

"I felt nervous too," Jake said. "The rail helps. So does going one step at a time."

Maria grinned at him.

"Remember when you told me the truth?" she asked.

Jake looked at the water, then at his friend.

"That was the first brave part," he said.
