The Cottage in the Clearing

A Tale of True Friendship

The Cottage in the Clearing

Bruno the bear likes his tidy cottage exactly as it is. When Pip the porcupine needs a dry place for autumn, the two friends learn how small changes, patient questions, and shared work can make room for everyone.

Bruno’s Tidy Home

Bruno was a friendly brown bear with a red-roofed cottage in a forest clearing. He kept flower boxes under every window, swept the path each morning, and baked berry pies whenever the bushes were full.

One misty morning, Bruno heard rustling near the petunias. A small porcupine stepped out with a tiny backpack and a tired face.

“Hello,” Bruno said. “I am Bruno. Do you need help finding a dry place?”

“I am Pip,” said the porcupine. “My old oak home cracked in heavy rain. I need a snug corner for autumn.”

Making Room

Bruno had never shared his cottage with a porcupine. Pip’s quills looked sharp, and Bruno’s chairs were soft.

Still, the air was getting chilly.

“You may use my garden shed tonight,” Bruno said. “Tomorrow we can make it more comfortable.”

They lined the shed with dry leaves, hung a little lantern, and placed Pip’s backpack on a shelf. Pip thanked Bruno three times before bedtime.

A Better Plan

The next morning, Bruno and Pip tried doing chores together.

Pip wanted to help water the flowers, but the watering can bumped against his quills. Bruno wanted to bake, but the kitchen felt crowded with two friends turning around in it.

They sat at the table with paper and a pencil.

“What works for you?” Bruno asked.

“Wide spaces,” Pip said. “And tools with long handles.”

“What works for me?” Bruno said.

“Neat shelves,” Pip replied. “And pie dough that does not meet my quills.”

Both friends laughed.

Clever Cottage Tools

They made changes one at a time.

Bruno moved a chair away from the stove. Pip tied soft corks onto the sharpest garden tools. They made a long-handled berry scoop, a wide dough board, and a cushioned bench where Pip could sit without poking anything.

After heavy rain tapped on the roof, Bruno invited Pip inside for warm soup. The cottage felt different with two friends in it, but not worse. It felt busy, cozy, and alive.

Berry Pie Day

When the berry bushes filled again, Pip used the long scoop to gather fruit from high branches. Bruno rolled the dough on the wide board.

Their first pie came out crooked. Their second pie leaked purple juice. Their third pie smelled so good that three squirrels knocked on the door.

“May we try some?” asked one squirrel.

“There is room at the table,” Bruno said.

Room for Both

By winter, Bruno’s cottage still had flower boxes, tidy shelves, and warm berry pies. It also had long-handled tools, a cushioned bench, and a porcupine friend who knew exactly where to place his backpack.

Whenever anyone asked how a bear and a porcupine shared one cottage, Bruno and Pip pointed to the table.

“We asked what each friend needed,” Pip said.

“Then we made room,” Bruno added.
