Young squire Jack is asked to guard an abandoned section of the castle, but his quiet watch turns mysterious when strange things begin to happen. To protect the kingdom, Jack must follow the clues and speak up before midnight.

The Task

In a grand castle, there lived a young squire named Jack. He was eager to help and careful with every task he was given.

One day, the king called Jack into his chambers and gave him an important task. “Jack,” said the king, “I need you to guard an old section of the castle that has been abandoned for many years.”

Jack stood a little taller. This was an important task, and he had never been trusted with something so crucial before. As he began his watch, strange things started happening.

At first, Jack thought it might be his imagination playing tricks on him. Then he heard noises coming from within the walls and footsteps echoing through empty halls.

Something was not right in this part of the castle.

Jack took his lantern and decided to investigate.

The Mysterious Noises

Jack had been tasked with guarding the abandoned section of the castle. As he sat there, he heard strange noises coming from within the walls. It sounded like something was moving around in there!

Jack slipped back into the hallway before they noticed him. He needed a plan.

Jack knew he had to act quickly if he wanted to warn the king before midnight. He ran back to his post and studied the old map beside the guardroom.

He remembered hearing about secret passages in the castle that led behind the council chamber.

Carefully, Jack made his way through the dim passageways until he reached a narrow grate behind the king’s chamber. He heard enough to know the strangers planned to sneak inside at midnight.

Jack ran to the captain of the guard. Together, they warned the king, locked the secret passage, and caught the strangers before anyone was hurt.

Recognition and Knighthood

King George was grateful when he learned how carefully Jack had followed the clues. In recognition of his courage and quick thinking, the king knighted him as Sir Jack.

After that, Sir Jack became one of King George’s most trusted knights. People came from far away to see him ride by on horseback with armor shining bright.

Whenever anyone asked how Sir Jack became so brave, he would simply smile and say, “I did what any loyal squire would do for their king.”
